View Full Version : Shortage of small rifle primers?

Just wanted to see what the local gossip is about the shortage of small rifle primers. Sportsmans Warehouse, Bass Pro are out, seem to be on backorder all over the net. I did find some on the net, but with a $20 hazmat fee it's a bit much. Anyone know why the shortage? Seems odd it's only small rifle as large rifle, small and large pistol are well stocked.
Now I will rant:
I found a guy today at a hole in the wall called the Reloader's Corner.
What a dump. Anyway, he had some primers, and I found some good deals on bullets for .223 and brass for my .357.
I was about to spend a bunch and (from the looks of the store) make this guys day. I gave him my visa card. All my cards say "see ID" on the back.
He says " I can't take it if the card's not signed" to which I replied "that's why I'm showing you my ID". Again, he says " I can't take it if it's not signed". I said "well, I guess I don't need to buy anything from you" and walked out.
I know it's his business, but he didn't even go as far as to look at my ID. Even if I had cash on hand I would not buy anything from him just due to his attitude.
There. I feel better. Sigh. [Rant2]

"See ID" is not a legal signature according the the Credit people.

He has the right to refuse the card if it is not signed. It is a valid reason as most cards in reality are technically not valid unless they are signed by the authorized use.
I find no fault with his reasoning considering the amount of credit card fraud there is.

a few other reasons why there is a shortage is because a lot of people are getting into reloading as the price of ammo increases. Also, people are hoarding. If I find primers I usually pick up a few thousand; instead of, a few hundred and I share them with my dad.
LariatBob, how many primers are you looking for?

I'd like to get around 500, so I can finish what I have ready and have a few hundred left for after I shoot them. I need 250 to finish my loading.
I guess (hope) this is a temporary shortage, so I suppose I can just wait it out. Don't really have a choice. At least it's not a critical need, like food or beer![Beer]
I'll just keep calling around till I find some. It's not like I've scoured all of Colorado (yet).
Co Spgs Sportsmans Whse had some Magtech small rifle primers a couple of weeks ago. I bought 1K to try because nothing else has been available. No problems so far ; in fact test loads had smaller ES ( and SD ) than I expected!

Bob,
I can help you out with 500-1000. I have some CCI 400's. We met about 2 weeks ago, you shot my suppressed rifle.

Damn! Small world. How's it going?
I just talked to BassPro, he says he's got some CCI's. I am going there this afternoon. If it's a bust, I'll get with you. Sure appreciate the offer. See ya sometime soon up north.

bought 1K of small rifle primers and 500 large rifle primers at sportsmans the other day. I think when they get them in they are gone within a day or two. i even found a couple of them laying on the ground...probably the aftermath of a fight that broke out when they were put on the shelf and two old reloaders grabbed the same box![ROFL1]
I have enough to hold me over for now.
I will not buy primers from bass. they have them in when i go there, but at over $2 more per/100, there is no way. I won't pay more than double just because they are in stock...that is the reason they are in stock Im sure.
Everyone seems to be out of varget, except cabelas! I was up there this weekend and got a couple lbs to try. If i like it, then sportsmans sometimes has the 8 lbs in stock.

Well, I went to BassPro. They had them alright, at $4.99 a box!!!!
I bought 2 boxes to finish my batch. That's the last time for them!
Cocoboots, I'm handled for now, thanks. I'll just keep checking with Sportsman's from time to time.
Anyone seen primers at Tanner? I've never been to a Tanner show, don't know if they have deals on such stuff. Might have to stop in this weekend's show, but I know I'll have to wear my blinders or take my wife with me so I don't find some "deal I couldn't refuse".

I tried to warn you about the Bass prices. that is one of the things I will not buy there. I told the guys at the counter to check the prices at sportsmans since they are over $2 less per /100. thats on the verge of insane.
I haven't been to tanner for a little while but the last ones I was at there wasn't a lot of reloading supplies. If there was it was overpriced at I bypassed it pretty quick. Most of the time the prices at the shows are pretty bad, although you do find a decent deal every now and then.
If anyone is in dire need I stock piled 10K of Winchester SR about 6-8 months ago when they were starting to get spotty on the shelves. I could let loose of a couple of 1000 at a fair price or trade for something you have a surplus of like 308 brass, .30 147-150gr FMJ projectiles, 45ACP brass or projectiles, etc...
You might also check Dad's Wholesale, he has a place in a small industrial park down off N Washington by the merchandise mart. I know his powder prices are close to Sportsman's I have never priced his primers.
Rant on-------
IMHO the old fart at the Reloading Corner is a a$$ of the first order. The long and the short of it is he does not want to take plastic and pay the fee. I went in and tried to buy a fair amount of brass and a set of dies. I asked if he took debit cards on the phone when I called to check his stock. His reply was yes. When I presented my debit card for payment he told me there was a ATM across the street. Yes my card is signed.....I guess the part that chaps my butt is I asked before I attempted the purchase or drove to his shop.
Rant off -----

Well at least I found someone else who has tried to deal with him. I just discovered Dad's myself, bought 1k of Remington Bench primers for $28. I'll defiantely go back to him for all my stuff.
By the way, Mudbug, I sent you a message about the powder you have that needs a good home....
As for the primers, I try and keep some on hand always but when I get low, I look around for the best deal as well. SP had some yesterday and I picked up 1K.
As for the reloader's corner....well I have shopped there for years and he has always been that way, I have the same on my card...I know it's his right to do so and I let it go that way. But.... I have always gotten some great deals there and he has a lot know how too.
I am sure we all have some rules we live by that someone else might not care for...........

i picked up 5K os winchester small rifle from Don (Denver bullet) during a work break @ Tanner yesterday. my neighbor's going down today may have him p.u another 5K for me.
I saved a few $$ , however componentes are climbing in price a little slower than loaded ammo is.
if you have some extra cash , buy it now. being new to reloading (good deal on progressive setup) i'm still tinkering with my handgun load. BUT picking up rifle components as the cash flow allows.
That guy at reloaders corner...I just don't know about him. I started using him in 1993 because I didn't know of any other options. That is one of the most depressing stores I have ever been in. I can't believe he is still in business. My new shop is right down the street from him and I decided to stop by the other day half expecting the place to be boarded up. I milled around for a while and didn't want to leave without purchasing something. I ended up buying a loading tray for like 8 bucks or so...The funny thing is when I opened my wallet and realized I had no cash, I was terrified! I knew the lecture was coming. He sighed and moaned as he filled out his little handwritten reciept using a calculator that is so covered in finger scum that no numbers and few symbols were legible. Must be a great businessman or just in it as a hobby for surviving this many years treating his customers like dirt. Any advice I ever asked him for was usually less than 50% accurate. I will keep an eye out for the Going Out of Business Clearance sign and let everyone know about it! Until then....never again.
I bought a couple thousand at the last tanner show. I think it was like $42. Not a bad price. Sportsmans *****house has had empty shelves foor a few months now(littleton)
SW in Thornton had about 10K left on the shelves on May 10th after I hoarded 3K.
Went back to grab 2K more this morning. Still a few thousand left. The Denver Post website has a printable $10 off $50 dollar purchase coupon for SW. Go to the fishing hunting page. I have used three of these ccoupons in the last three days with no hassle. Just limit your purchases to about $50 dollars a day then take 20% off with the coupon. They don't expire till like June 30th I think. Will be there tomorrow to stock up on flies for my upcoming fishing trip.
the local shop got a shipment of primers, and I picked up 5k federal gold match today for $28.00/1000

I've found, personally, that short of mail order Sportsman's Warehouse has the best prices and service in town. But, their inventory control leaves a bit to be desired... Check back often: They'll have something the first day, be out the second, have it the third, be out the fourth and fifth, have it again on days six and seven, and so on.
I've only ever heard bad things about the Reloader's Corner. Every time I hear the place mentioned, someone is talking about how the guy who runs the place is: Rude, annoying, a bigot, etc...
I keep meaning to check it out, as it is only a couple of miles from my house. But, the countless bad reviews I've heard of the place have thus far kept me away!

Went in there a few months back..he had a Lee Deluxe Reloading Kit, for 98$. Good deal for this reloader...told him I was gonna come back on payday and pick it up. Came back 4 days later and he had upped the price on it to $130. When I asked him why the increase he just said prices are going up on everything....wasnt friendly and acted like I was too much to bother with so I bought mine off the internet...actually with shipping paid the same price, but I refuse to buy from someone who doesnt appreciate my business, and especially that pulls crap like that.

All I can say is F*** reloaders corners. I have had the same experience and if that guy really is knowledgeable he sure doesn't want to share any of it. I will never go back. Midway is the only way to go. And you can actually get it for cheaper if you wait and buy at the right time.
You still bitter about that.

Does anyone use CCI 41 5.56 small rifle primers?
I picked up 50k of them and was trying to sell them for $22.50 at the gun shows but no one was ever interested. Ended up trading them for some 7.62mm primers.
I can get more.
I can also get:
CCI 400 Small Rifle, Remington 612 small rifle, Rem 712 small rifle bench rest,
All would be $28.50
