View Full Version : Lee-Enfield SMLE Info?
My dad picked up a SMLE for $19 over 50 years ago. He's mentioned passing it on to me and I may have it in about 5 months. The last time I gave it a cleaning the bore looked amazingly bright and in good condition. I'm interested in using it, but I want to make sure it's safe.
Do you guys know who would be a good resource to give it a going over to make sure there aren't any problems with it?
BP TACTICAL
Give Bert a shout,he'll give it a good look over.
I have a couple of books on the Enfields that tells you all about them. From history, production ammo and all kinds of usefull info if your interested in borrowing them ;)
For the most part I have yet to see one thats too bad to shoot, but better play safe than sorry since it's been sitting a while.
Thanks for the info and the offer.
Anytime, just send me a pm if you ever need the books.

Bert has my Ishapore right now doing some barrel work. I have had a few of them. One of my favorite guns to shoot. Very accurate guns.

Did you get a 308 one?I would love to put a scout mount and scope on mine..

Yes. 7.62 NATO. I also mounted scout scope mount and shortened barrel, target crown and added a YHM flash suppressor. It was already sporterized with polymer stock. I picked this one up for 200 and have another No1 mk3 in 303 right now. I am presently looking for a no4 to convert to 762x39. Good stuff here.

Here is the scout scope mount I am using. I will be using stripper clips for reload. They are quite fast and easier than mag changes on these rifles.

I will post a photo when it is all done. I am going to parkerizng or Duracoat it when I gt it back from Bert.
Don't know if it'll work on a SMLE, but I'm thinking about one of these for one of my No.4's or my No.5. http://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/scope-bases/rifle-bases/enfield-no-4-no-5-prod1502.aspx Not a scout mount, but no drilling or tapping either. My No.5 came with an old Weaver mount, so it's already D&T'd, but that mount is a piece of shit.

I had one on a Mk 4 a few years back. It was pretty solid. I would advise that one over the other version that replaces the rear sight cross bolt and wedges over the bolt.

Looks like a nice setup.I would hate to drill and tap any of my Enfeilds. If I ever find one that has been bubbad though I'll go to town on it.They make for some damn good shooters once acurized and Bert would be the man that can do it![Beer]

I have a #4 that was sporterized when I got it, cut down with a Mini 30 flash hider on the front that I want to send to Special Interest Arms and have converted to .45 ACP; and if they get any more adapters also have it set up to take an AR-15 grip & stock.
I have a Mauser that the Turks had hacked up when they were doing their Model 38 conversions on all their different rifles, and it was unsafe to convert to 7.62...I didn't find the problem until I'd taken the old barrel off. So I got one of the .45 ACP kits from Rhineland Arms and set it up as a .45 ACP Mauser Carbine. It's a lot of fun, and it seems like the Enfield would be even more fun with the AR stock adapter.
I'd love to find an Ishapore 2A that someone messed with, and turn it into a #5 type project along the lines of what Navy Arms used to build.
ETA: Here's a link to a bunch of Enfield info. I'm surprised Rondog didn't mention it, I know he's in there quite a bit.

Actually, I haven't been on that board in quite awhile. But he's right, there's a TON of Enfield knowledge there, and serious collectors of all milsurp rifles.
It's funny, I have a 1952 RFI SMLE that I got from Alxone that's an Ishy, made in India (still .303). It has the typical ass-ugly finish that those old Indian rifles had, but it's a good-shootin' sumbitch. Never really done any serious paper-punching with it, but I busted up a lot of rocks at long distances one time at that range north of Grand Junction. Gotta love a rifle that'll hit rocks you can barely see way off in the distance! And that was with that awful POF Indian/Pakistani surplus may-pop ammo that everyone curses.
I scored a long RFI bayonet for it somewhere, and I swear the wood and finish on that bayonet looks like it was made from part of my rifle. You couldn't match the two any closer if you tried. It's like they were once together, then separated, and reunited. So they both gonna stay ugly!

Thanks for those othe links Troubleco. They are great guns. The ones I have owned, always performed respectfully. I am looking forward to some long distant shoots in the future. I could use some tutelage.
Here is another link to a great company that has conversion kits for the No 4. http://www.specialinterestarms.com/index.php?page=home

Yeah, that's the outfit I want to have do the .45 conversion on my chopped #4. I don't feel like taking the barrel off of this one myself, I'm just going to send it in and have them do it.

You will have to post the conversion. I am considering picking up a No1 and doing the conversion to 7.62x39. They said it could be done, but is more work than on the No4.
