Locking ammo cans

So, other than putting some sort of latch or hasp on them, is there a clever way to secure an ammo can with a pad lock?

Thanks. I had kind of pictured something like that. I just didn't want the head of the bolt inside of the can. Perhaps I can do something similar but use a carriage bolt instead.

I wouldn't trust anything from MS so Bing is out. I like using GoodSearch.com since my searches benefit my selected charity (NRA-CDF in this case) but you have to realize GoodSearch basically relies on Yahoo.

As far as being duped, you KNOW there will be another thread on this in about 2 days ... [facepalm]

A cable lock will work fine. Or a chain and padlock. For low security, just a plastic zip strip can keep people from snooping.

have one of us ak builder use our spot welder to spot weld a heavy tab with a hole for the lock on the front of the can then use a cutoff wheel to cut a slot in the ammo can latch tab

Exactly. I can't get more than 5 long guns, half a dozen pistols and 10k rds in my safe.

in fact i have been looking for a second safe myself just for ammo, or maybe just a really big one and sell my 28 gun

Then I would just have to buy more guns to fill it. Funny how a 28 gun safe only fits what I described.

In all seriousness, I'm going to be fitting locking bars on some HD rivet-lock shelving so if they do try to get away with ammo cans, they'll have to work at it.

There's way more electronics in the house that are worth more than the ammo and easier to take so it would have to be a pretty dumb burglar to wanna spend time sawing through security bars.

P.S. I can't recall the thread, but someone mentioned NRA "insurance" as part of the benefits.

I was part of that. I do need to make the cans locking but for now the cans are chained to wire rack shelving so yes someone could open the cans but a grab and go is not in the cards.

I ended up with a job site box. Not fire proof but rain and theft resistant. Just don't know if I'll be getting it out of the basement.

I've been planning on using something like the bolt idea with a thin carriage head smooth shaft (don't want the threading of a bolt) coming through and using epoxy putty to secure the bolt head in place. The use of the epoxy putty will seal the drilled hole in the ammo can - effectively returning the moisture seal.
