Recreational shooters start fire on Pawnee National Grassland
http://www.greeleytribune.com/news/4886993-113/fire-grassland-recreational-arp
Recreational shooters using illegal tracer bullets sparked two fires Sunday on the Pawnee National Grassland. The first fire, called the Coal 2 Fire, burned approximately 62 acres of the Grassland, and a second fire burned a little more than an acre on private land. Those responsible for starting them will be cited. Their names were not released. Tracer bullets and other incendiary ammunition are illegal. The violation carries a $525 to $5,000 fine and can include a mandatory appearance in federal court. Recreational shooting information is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/targetshooting.
Illegal? Then why are they sold in stores likes sportsmans?

It's mind-boggling how anyone so stupid can live long enough to perpetrate such idiocy. Brings to mind all the "no-shooting" signs on private property at Pawnee, riddled with bullet holes.

Whoever thinks "Tracers" belong in a place with "Grasslands" in the name just isn't thinking right.

Why would tracer rounds out at Pawnee seem like a good idea when it has been as dry as it has. Real smart ones

Don't worry, soon they will shut down most outdoor shoting areas in the Denver area over "enviromental concerns"......just like they did in California 10 years ago.
Welcome to the NEW Colorado, enjoy your stay.

Jesus-With-A-.45 is correct. They are itching to shut down the public range.

^This.
Would it be a good thing for humanity if we could cure stupid?
I think major or severe stupidity should be fatal not just painful.

Sad part is the folks who did it probably aren't even close to being responsible gun owners. (obviously)

Common sense is as common as a superpower
Clowns like these running around on our ranges only worsens the bubba stereotype.
We went to Syracuse for Thanksgiving, stopped in Gander Mountain for grins. They had PALLETS of 5.56 tracers in ammo cans for sale, and cheap. If you know how densely wooded and brushy damn near ALL of Central New York is, you'd be just as shocked as I was at seeing hundreds of thousands of tracers for sale there. I couldn't believe it, but it IS pretty moist around there, lots of rain and snow. Not dry as hell like here. But a vastly higher population of knuckledragging idiots that shouldn't have ammo that makes fire.

I'll admit metallurgy is not my field of expertise, but wouldn't running any significant volume of tracer ammo through your rifle chew up the barrel?
or am I completely off base here?

Ignition should occur after the bullet leaves the barrel.

most tracers ignite from the energy created as it is traveling in the air at super sonic speeds. should not have any effect on barrel
