View Full Version : Moving a gun safe...
Has anyone done it without paying a moving company? I am thinking about picking up this safe from Costco.

Weights 450lbs, and I want to have it in the basement. It is not a walkout basement and there are two flight of stairs (zigzag).
Costco will deliver it to the sidewalk, and I would be responsible for moving it to its final location.
Any tips or ideas?

at least 2 other people (large) and an appliance dolly. That's what it took getting a like safe UP stairs to my closet. Don't let anyone or anything go in front of the safe while going down the stairs. I'll say a prayer for you.

When I bought my current safe, the dealer delivered it and moved it up a flight of stairs by himself with a battery powered dolly that climbed up the stairs. Call around, you might be able to rent one.

I slid mine down the stairs pretty easily, it's a little bigger than the one you're getting. I did have some people on the bottom half of the safe and we went real slow, didn't want momentum building up. I didn't have the zigzag stairs like you have though, mine was a straight shot. Best of luck !!!
most tool rental places have a dolly that has a motorcycle battery on it, and a set of motorized stair climber feet on them.

The only way to do it. Forget the appliance dolly.

I had to remove the door from mine, and use an appliance dolly and a friend to get it in the house.

my neighbor has his in his living room... it does make for good conversation!
We moved my Brothers Gun Safe to his basement and he took off the door to lighten the load. We used a appliance dolly to get it to the top of the stairs then disconnected it and slid it on it's back. Two football players at the bottom and me at the top and it went pretty smooth. We even had a 90 degree turn about 3/4's of the way down. I hope he never moves, I'd hate to have to drag it out of there. [Weight]

As long as your stairs are carpeted, 3 guys can handle it easily. It's getting it back up the stairs that will be the pain in the arse...

Sorry to bring back an older thread, but I have a question along these lines.
I'm more curious as to how to get a safe home. I'm looking at a 520 lbs. safe and have a Suburban. Is it reasonable to slide it in on its back into the Suburban, or is this something that I'm going to have to get an open bed pickup for? Also, if I need a pickup, how would I go about getting the beast out of the bed at home?
I've never moved anything remotely this large so I have no idea what is practical and what isn't. Thanks for the help.

I would recommend a pickup with a lift gate. Pretty sure you can rent them.
Or a trailer with ramps. Thats how I did it. This method also moves large tool boxes full of tools real nice.
#1. I'm too old and fat to try it myself, I'd definitely hire it done. I have enough aches and pains, thank you.
#2. I'd be scared to death that the stairs wouldn't handle the weight of the safe and all the necessary grunts. I've read horror stories of collapsed stairs and mangled bodies.
If I bought a big safe for my basement, I'd go with one from Zanotti Armor. They come in 6 pieces, plus the optional interior package however you want it. You tote the parts downstairs, then assemble it in place.
