$1500 is the new reasonable.
You see a few used ones now and then for under $1K but they don't last long. You can still build one off a kit for under $1k. Down side with AK's especially the 5.45x39's are AMMO, AND MAGS, mags run an easy $30+ a pop, AMMO, GET ON LINE.

Yeah the ammo is easy to find but don't really understand the crazy prices? Never thought id see the day where an ak cost more then my ar15 lol

The past?
The past?
Unfortunately. It's crazy when I have seen used SAR and WASR variants going for more than brand new milled receiver ones did just a couple of years ago. I've never really priced the 5.45 models, but if you find either a 7.62 or 5.45 AK under 1k right now and you have the money for it you should probably grab it.
the last couple of times i have been in jensen arms they have had some for $850 or so, if I am remembering right.

Buy the saiga and convert it, there are numerous web sites that walk you through the process. What ever you do use rivets, some of the screw builds look "flimsy" and i would question a firearm done that way. Unless i knew their overall capability.

Yeah never really worked on a gun like that lol......I like saiga but the front for grip thing just doesn't look the same as a normal ak

don't know if you're still looking, but i came across this one for $599 today---waffen werks with a grade b stock set. trying to figure out why i shouldn't pull the trigger on this one--refinishing the stock would be a fun project

Look no further than zteknik for AK furniture finishing.

[pick-me]Absolutely!!
By the time I get done with the furniture you'll have a $900 shooter!
From what I've been seeing parts kits alone are going from $300 up.
By the time your all said and done you have invested more or close to what it is from Classic.

do you know anything about these waffen werks ak74s? as with anything, opinions vary widely out there. I don't need a $2000 rifle dynamics model, but i'd rather avoid a turd.
I heard (through the internet) good things about them.

buy a wasr from aim or center fire systems. That's about as fair as you'll get in todays market.

I personaly had no experience with them, but it's an AK - cant realy screw one up Even Century monkeys cant screw it up too bad..
The ones to stay away from are the Hesse built ones.

AK's will come down in price just give it some time. No one is buying them at current prices. All the shops I have been to in the last 8 months still have all the same rifles sitting there. If you have to have one right now Jensens has pistolgrip conversion saigas for 850$. I would wait the prices will come down soon.
Waffen Werks are no better or no worse than pretty much anyone elses. They use ESS barrels, which are the industry standard. You can do much better with a custom barrel, etc, but they are good guns. Certainly not the best, but they go bang.
Waffen Werks is owned by the brother of Stefni, who owns ARAK, and their dad used to own Tennessee guns until the partner fall-out a few years ago. A lot of shit-flinging and controversy on both sides, and lawsuits still involved.
And dad is the county sheriff, too, lol.
Anyways, like I said, no better and no worse. But overpriced.
I think it's Royal Tiger that has 74s for $550.
jgsales has a converted saiga 5.45x39 for $499
http://www.jgsales.com/saiga-ak-style-rifle,-5.45x39,-black-synthetic-stock,-new.-p-63104.html
Russian receiver, Russian BCG and Russian CHF, chrome-lined barrel for $499 is a heck of a deal compared to all the other options right now. I'd take that over a Waffen Werks or Century parts build any day. You can convert the frontend as time and cash permits.

Unlike 7.62 caliber AK's ranging from WASR to Krebs. There are not very many competitions in the 74 market, so the price are generally higher.

Waffen Werks has been putting out bad lemons lately. Ask guys from AK forum.

is there any functional difference between this and what we would say is a "traditional" AK fore-end, or is it just a cosmetic difference?

Yes. different hand guards, different gas block and front sight. Up side is the butt stock and trigger guard are correct. Down side is the "true AK" look it is not. However consider thses AK's comprable to the "Dissapator" style AR's. You have a longer sight radius with the gas block under the hand guards. For the price buy it, convert front end later. OR spend another $100 (approx) and get a true looking AK.
IMO, unless you want an AK in the 5.45 caliber, i'd invest in a 5.45x39 AR upper.

It's cosmetic. The internal action and parts are standard AK. Saigas come from the same factory that makes the real 74. The important part is you're getting a factory new AK from the place that wrote the book on how to build a proper AK. The only American parts will be 922r compliance parts (FCG, pistol grip, furniture, etc).
If you don't care about 100% correctness, you can convert the front end pretty easily to get the traditional look. The gas tube would simply be swapped out with the traditional part and there are 2 piece press on retainers to allow you to use the the traditional lower handguard. If you want to do it right with bayonet and accessory lugs, proper threads on the FSB for the brake, etc, then you need to press off the FSB and gas block to do it right from a cosmetic standpoint.
