View Full Version : Marine loses his s*%& in road rage incident...

Okay, this is just scary- according to the passenger of the vehicle (the one who filmed the incident) this marine cut them off and continued to slam on his brakes until they finally hit him. At which point the video begins...

Man he is PISSED! The Marine, reportedly a SGT from Camp Pendleton, absolutely loses his shit and even went as far as striking the vehicle and window, making threats. I'm sorry, I have love for my "other brothers in green" (Marines), but regardless of service or not, you do this to me I'm calling 911, and if I feel you may make a successful attempt at getting into my vehicle to cause me harm, I'm plugging you! I hope this d-bag faces charges, this is behavior not becoming of a United States Marine. [Bang]

Ok, Marine's bad behavior is obvious, but there is also this:

"“He cut them off and apparently he kept brake-checking them,” said Lisa. “He would slam on his brakes abruptly. They hit into the back of him on the third time.”

The people following him had at least 2 instances to understand this was a driver with a PROBLEM and yet they continued to follow close enough to eventually rear-end this guy on the 3rd time. They need to take some responsibility for that IMO, but no one is going to focus on that much thanks to the Marine totally losing his shit.

Man. The people in the car handled it well. Shoot video, stay calm. I would probably have wanted to also be on the phone with 911 - so that I could tell them that if he gets into my car before the police arrive, he's getting shot.

Not sure I would have wanted to pull a gun and tell the guy to back off. Maybe he goes back to his truck and gets his own.

Also not sure I'd sit there. After shooting a little video, if the guy doesn't calm down, I'm on the phone with 911, and I tell them I'm afraid for my safety, and I'm leaving, and I drive to the police station or some other appropriate public place - not sit there and wait for him to bash my window in. Because if he bashes my window in, he's getting shot, and I'd rather avoid that if possible.

That's bullshit. You're driving down the street, some guy keeps cutting you off and brake-checking you. You get into a different lane, he does it again. What are you supposed to do?

I like to believe that there are two sides to every story, and regardless of who actually caused the accident (who knows, what if it went down to a single lane in that direction? What if the angry marine passed in a passing zone?), the marine's behavior is inexcusable and he's lucky he wasn't shot.

Taking chain of events reported at face value, and it sounds like they could have done more to avoid the situation. Don't take it to mean I'm trying to excuse the Marine's behavior. But generally, there's plenty to do -- change lane, slow down enough to achieve a safe distance in between, or pull over if necessary.

I don't think the people inside the cab handled it well either if they continued to follow him closely enough to rear-end him on his third brake-check. The street they were stopped at certainly seemed wide enough to maneuver around him or slow down enough that he had no choice but to go on and away.

The story said the passenger was a wounded Marine paralyzed from the waist down. That explains the cap on the dash; I kept getting distracted by the little scarf thing around the driver's neck thinking there's no way a guy wearing that metrosexual crap is also sporting a Marine camo cap.

I think I've become a better driver by LIGHTYEARS since I started carrying a gun full time. I used to be pretty aggressive, and pulled a lot of stupid shit like following people home, slamming on my brakes. Dumb kid stuff. When I started carrying, I immediately started assessing situations differently, realizing that any path I chose to go down in anger could potentially alter my entire life (and someone else's) for the worse. I'm the Gandhi of driving now.

Take the next turn without signalling and circle the block once. Problem solved.

Road rage is typically random violence perpetrated by unstable individuals about to go off at any moment and just need an "excuse" to focus on one specific target. Remove yourself from the equation and you will be quickly disregarded as he seeks out his next target . . . unless he's already on YOUR rear bumper and tailing you, then you call 911 on your cellphone and slowly drive to a police station, circle a busy parking lot, or keep driving until police respond to your call. Worst thing to do is pull over and talk to the guy as if he's a rational human being, or ignore him and lead him to your home.

By the way, for all we know these two asshats in the truck were tailgating or attempting to pass illegally. The video doesnt show anything they might have done. Poke a dog, even a nice peaceful dog, with a stick long enough, and your likely to get bitten.
In our "modern civilized society" we have this notion that no matter what the provokation, reacting is bad. Getting angry is bad. Well yanno, if I was being tailgating and having a bad day I might just brake check someone too, especially if they had done something stupid causing me to cut them off. And if they actually hit me from behind- especially with my wife in the car, well that might put me over the edge. Although I would likely have called the cops, blocked the road, and sat there with myfirearms pointed in a non-threatening direction until the police arrived. Other folks are not as calm or rational as I am.
Yes folks, having a temper is bad. Enhance your calm citizen...

Sorry, that doesn't really help explain how there's no way they could have removed themselves from the situation. From the video, looks like there's more than one lane in their direction and STILL doesn't explain why they were still following close enough to rear-end him by the 3rd brake check.. The only thing I can think of is if the Marine's cutoff happened right before the 3rd brake check, then yes, they likely wouldn't have sufficient reaction time.

The noteworthy bit in that thread (I didn't read it all):

"OK, tough guy, THAT was not the guys wife, that was her brother. The chick in the car is MARRIED to a Marine. They guy driving the truck is diagnosed with a mental disorder and has NO business behind the wheel. He had no license and no insurance. They gave false insurance papers at the scene. The driver of the truck also hit the Marines car, not once but 2 times, with HIS wife and 3 yr old daughter in the car.. again, I don't condone his behavior, he was way out of line, but all you guys making comments about something you have NO CLUE about is beyond stupid"

All I'm suggesting is that from what info is available is that they potentially had a chance to avoid it and generally when you rear-end someone you're responsible. Like I said, if he cut them off right before braking with the intent of getting them to hit him that's another thing, and I have no idea how the law in California sees that.

Haven't read pages 2 - 4, but just so everyone knows the point of reference, they were already aboard Pendleton (coming in from the Del Mar main gate), I.E. a federal installation in California. If you used a concealed handgun from your car you'd basically be fucked. The hipsters did the right thing. This is pure presumption on my part but hell, getting on base at that gate regardless of the time of day is bumper-to-bumper traffic. So of course everyone is riding everyones' ass.

I'm amazed how many here are piling on to the driver as if he deserves to be dragged out of the car and beat up by a raging Marine. Traffic looked pretty heavy, so its hard to tell if they could get out from behind him easily, but we're not there ... I leave that up to the traffic investigator.

That said, I don't care if the driver carelessly rear ended the Marine ... hell, I don't care if he did it on purpose, that in ZERO way justifies the Marine's actions.

The thing that's most annoying is that if he wasn't identified as a Marine most would have no extra sympathy for him. I have a lot of respect for anyone that serves our country (especially in combat) but once you cross a few lines here at home you're a jackass and no longer have my respect (yeah, I'm looking at you John McCain :p ).

As for how I'd have handled it, being armed I'd have likely sat there just like the driver but if the glass on my window broke, that's when I'd probably draw.

Okay, everybody I didn't post this with the intent to pick the situation apart before the camera started filming... Unless you were actually physically witness to the events leading up, please don't speculate, that's just presumptuous (or in better words, you're assuming and you know what happens when you ASS-U-ME). Needless to say, I had the distinct honor of serving under an NCO who put it to me very plainly, and this transcends whatever branch one may be in- "YOU represent not just your unit, but those brothers and sisters in your unit, the Army and most importantly AMERICA. Act accordingly, for there are those out there who don't see it as the actions of the individual, but a member of your unit, a soldier, an American." The maximum effective range of an excuse is ZERO. Period, end of transmission. What this young Sergeant did is inexcusable and brings shame on himself, his unit, his corps and his country, the incident is on YouTube for the world to see, and I promise you there are numbskulls out there that will interpret this as the common actions of most run-of-the-mill Marines, and Americans... don't believe me, look at Piers Morgan, he lumps all gun owners in the same boat because of the actions of just one.

Not once he pulls up on my door handle its not just words he try's to enter my vehicle same rules as car jacking ....
THIS! Curse at me, flip me the bird, threaten, I can let it go. The moment you attempt to violate my feeling of safety and security you will go down and I will justify my actions according to my freedom to self preservation. Just like they say in the Thunderdome- make me feel like I'm at risk of life, limb or injury "two will enter, one will leave." Make sure I know where to send my condolences.
