View Full Version : Mount and rings
So I just convinced the wife to let me buy a brand new Savage Model 11 in .308win and Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40mm. The challenge right now is finding out the best mount and ring configuration for hunting purposes and maybe some long range shooting practice. I've been reading for 2 days and just cant figure it out; Single mount or 2 points, dove tails, leupold std, weaver, picatinny... (PPFFFTTTTTT!!!!!!! - mind blown - did not wear a helmet)
Does anyone have any recommendations for this dilemma?
By the way - are 308 rifles normally short action?
Thanks
EGW makes really good bases. And they come in 20moa or 0moa. As far as rings. I like Vortex, Leupold, or Burris Signature Zee. Most 308win rifles are short action.
I really like the DNZ mounds for a solid, rigid, lightweight setup. They're pretty foolproof. Midway and Optics Planet usually have good prices in the $60 range. I think Optics Planet does free shipping....least they used to.

I'd recommend Leupold rings and mounts. Whatever you decide on for a Savage make sure you get extension rings. Savage mounting points are very wide and extension rings will give you more scope adjustment (forward and rearward).

I run ERG base, leupold mark 4 rings.

I should've added: use extension rings if you're going with a traditional setup. If you're using a rail-type mount and rings, it won't matter.
Thanks guys, I've started to narrow down the options. I've eliminated the 2 point mounts. I saw a lot of complaint on how you have to reverse the rear mount so the scope would fit. AND by doing so it sort of blocks the ejection port. I am looking at the leupold, dnz, and egw as recommended.
but it brought up some new questions. At what range does the 20 MOA base be most useful for (long range) and does it affect short range shooting (50 yards)
Leupold only uses 3 of the 4 holes that are predrilled. Does is affect the stability of the scope?
Thanks again

HOLY MOLY!!! That's expensive! I dunno if I can convince the CFO to allow that purchase. I guess I better warm up the oils and stretch my fingers because here comes some back rubbing.

Not if you're using a one piece mount. 2 in front, 1 in rear. I wouldn't get too wound up over the 20MOA bases. Those would be useful at REALLY long range so you don't run out of adjustment...not really needed for the average hunting rifle.
May I ask what is considered REALLY long range? Or a range that the 20 MOA base would be useful. Thanks

Burris Zee Rings are great. They have inserts to add or remove elevation (0; +/-10; +/-20moa). I ran on Burris Xtreme 2-piece base on my Savage with Burris Zee rings and had great success. Great clearance for top loading rifles too.

I'm using a Larue 20 moa base and TPS 30mm rings.
The TPS TSR™ Rings utilize a unique design which allows the user to fully tighten the left side of the ring, uniquely allowing the user to precisely rotate the scope to adjust the scope reticle for proper position, then tighten the right side of the rings, guaranteeing that the scope will not rotate within the rings, which is virtually impossible in any other design.
