Sig AR at Walmart $997: Any good?

Did a search in the forum and around the net and can't really come up with much other than the specs and a bunch of people that refer to it as an assault rifle with clips...

Anyway, I don't really know anything about Sig other than they make a pretty good handgun and that they are relatively new to the AR biz. I guess you could call me a 6920 fan boy but I see that this thing has some extra goodies with it that the 6920 does not (built in recepticle for a sling in the upper, some Magpul furntiture, can switch the mag release for lefties..Etc).

From what I can gather the barrel is not as heavy duty as the Colt but other than that the rifle seems to stack up pretty well?

Anyone that has one of these can you speak to its reliability compared to a Colt 6920, have you had any problems with yours, would you buy it again?

Am wondering what the quality is like for firearms produced over the last year or two with companies maybe just trying to get product on the shelf instead of focusing on producing a quality weapon.

I like the price point but am not sure if I should go with this or hold out and wait till Colt realizes they can sell their 6920s with 10 round magazines in Colorado.

Oh, and it has been a while since I bought an AR, these things I see on the shelves right now here in Colorado Wal-Marts aren't handicapped by any law that I missed or anything like that right?

Sig has the AR line of rifles out at least 4 years. They work well and that's a decent price point. No restrictions other than 15 round tops mags.
Myself i'd buy a Sig before dropping money on the Colt name.

My Dad has the Sig AR. I've shot it and gone through it. It seems like a quality product for the price point. I found no operational issues with it compared to the Spikes, Stag, and RRA ARs I lost in the boating accident. If I was in the market for an off-the-shelf sub $1k AR, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

My wife likes hers. Zero problems in 800 rounds. They had two options when I went. The one with Magpul furniture, and one with a 3x prismatic optic, (without magpul furniture). Hers has the optic which I was consistanly hitting a 14" gong at 550 meters. Money well spent in my opinion.

Still kicking myself for not buying 2 of these at the Taos NM Walmart, during the height of the last panic buy a few years back. Would have paid for our vacation. OD Green Magpul MOE variants, to boot.
They were $907.00 at the time (when $1600-1800 was cheap).

They were fairly new-to-market at the time, but they were Sigs, so I figured they were decent. Oh well...

Yeah, that is the thing. i have a Colt from a few years ago and love the thing, its been great and I would like another but I keep hearing about quality issues and rushed production since the Panic of the last few years. I know Colts were great deals but now am wondering if they are just another rifle and now other companies have caught up and maybe passed them? When I saw this Sig it got me wondering if that may be the way to go. I mean if it is basically the same gun with a few extra innovations for a couple hundred less, why not?

Bad news, Most of them are just another rifle. It's the shit folks hang off them , what make it interesting.

Yeah the one I saw today seemed to have Magpul furniture and I couldn't tell if it was a magpul BUIS or some other brand. I guess at that point it wasn't really a backup though. Of course there was no one there at the counter since it was Walmart but still has me thinking.

The only negative I can see is the barrel is not designed for use with a fully auto weapon and I am pretty sure that will not be a problem.

Well that is not entirely true, When you start getting into the off brand stuff that is typically sub $1K and down to the $700 range, you can just feel a difference in those. Things just don't feel like they fit together properly, gas keys are not staked properly or if at all. I want something that will let me use it well and keep on ticking like a champ after I take care of it and continue on for many years.

No input on the Sig, but I bought a Colt from Wally around Christmas of 2012, and while functionally flawless, the finish left a lot to be desired. Looking back, I probably should have contacted Colt, but since it functioned perfect and it was my only AR, I didn't want to go thru the hassle.

I owned a BCM prior to the Colt, and everything about that rifle was as good or better than the Colt. I no longer own the Colt, but rather a BCM. I can almost guarantee owner Paul Buffoni's QC is better than Colt's. Just my 2 on Colt's recent production stuff, and a shameless BCM plug.
