Thank goodness that wisdom still exists in our society, and importantly it is being expressed by some in the law enforcement community.

"Gun policy should not be guided by gut-level reactions to mass shootings in Aurora last July and at a Connecticut elementary school last month, the County Sheriffs of Colorado says in a position paper outlining a tough stance against legislation expected to be proposed soon by state Democrats."

The minority in Law Enforcement want gun control. The groups where leadership is appointed by big city mayors tend to be the ones claiming all law enforcement want gun control.

CSOC in Colorado and LEAGC and LEAA Nationally are just a few of the national groups telling the public otherwise.

You bring up a very good point, in that people's attitudes towards gun control is largely a function of their environment. Urban/city dwellers tend to be very much in favor of gun control while those in suburban/rural areas tend to be against it. Not sure how we can bridge that gap and convince those who live in the city about the importance of the Second Amendment. When we bring up the true purpose of the Second Amendment, deterrence to tyranny, gun control supporters in the cities are quick to dismiss any threat and call us paranoid and other less charitable names. They fail to see that their sense of complacency creates the very conditions for which a tyrant might exploit!

We will have to think a bit more on this topic, that is how to connect at both an emotional and logical level, because it is obvious that facts alone are not enough, and the Second Amendment is too important to simply ignore those who are exploiting the current situation for more stringent gun controls.

You touched on a very good topic here. We've discussed previously the growing polarization in this country and I think it is interesting to see these lines are becoming distinct between rural and urban areas. As you pointed out, gun-control advocates are found more often in urban areas, and yet these areas have higher incidence of gun-related crime. Urban areas are also populated with a higher incidence per capita of participants in various welfare and state-sponsored social services programs, as compared to rural areas. The political red vs blue county maps which have been posted here more than once, all show blue urban areas and red rural areas, with few exceptions.

So are liberal-leaning people simply drawn to highly-populated city centers, or does dwelling in a city produce left-leaning people? Is the same true for living in a rural area and a having a mindset which respects individual liberty and resists government control?

There is a definite diff between urban and rural areas. Urban areas have the higher populations so they tend to rule when voting. There needs to be some sort of way to allow rural areas to behave and have laws to fit and urban the same. But then you get into different laws for one county or area than another, a nightmare for enforcement. I don't know of a way to answer to the differences between the two areas and thoughts and how the gun laws could work. But the diffrences are night and day. Urban areas want "no guns". Rural areas have no problem with guns being around. But urban areas have the worst problems with violence and they can't or won't even try to understand that it's people who perpetrate the violence, not the guns. They just refuse to believe in individual responsibilities. They want Gubment to save them with freedom restricting laws, not realizing what they are actually giving up incrementally with each new law. They do not want to understand you cannot legislate morality. I have no answer, just some thoughts.
