From what I've seen, the reboot is necessary. The way we see the bootfiles did not change, so it must have been a frequency change, the modems would need reboot to adjust.

Went from 50 download to 77. No modem reboot necessary.

Mine didn't. I specifically tested prior to rebooting to find out if it was required. I've been using Comcrap (and previously AT&T) for cable internet since the mid 90's and every speed increase required a reboot before this one. Two days ago I ran a speed test and got nearly 100Mbps down w/o doing a reboot when prior to I would see ~50Mbps. I rebooted after that as I had a window when I could take my network offline and it hadn't been done in a while anyway and after that I had to reboot several times to get it to even work properly. I'm not sure why it allowed the speed increase w/o a reboot but I'm even more puzzled as to why it took several reboots to work properly after the fact. Like I said, check your speed first and if you don't have it and don't live in Fort Collins reboot and test again.
Hrm, will have to install my new modem and try it out. Granted, I'll be getting rid of 'em soon so I doubt it really matters, but still, 'd be nice.
Edit: Oh, Fort Collins not in the upgrade? Well screw 'em then :P
Comcast employees are douche bags.
Yep!
hahahaha
I tested right before and after so the reboot was definitely required for me.
Does anyone know if you can purchase your own VoIP enabled modem now? Last time I looked Comcast wouldn't allow you to purchase your own modem if you were also using VoIP.
Thanks
Ask 00Tec, he works there, and was the douche bag I was referring to. lmao
Amazon. Arris Tm722g or tg862g
ETA: dont get a used one. It may take a while to get it added and everything provisioned, so call when you have enough tike to spare. I would do it, but I dont have access to add an emta to inventory. The care agent will have to escalate it to get it added.
Explains why I got a visit from CenturyLink 2 days ago pimping their new TV and trying to get me to switch. They said "we have fiber and we're faster than comcast! We'll give you 20 mbs!" They wanted to get people switched before everyone found out Comcast gave a free increase...
