Normally with these speed increases you would need to reboot your modem but this time around they changed it at the headend so you shouldn't need to reboot to see the speed increase. That being said, if you don't see the speed increases a reboot won't hurt anything. Several areas got shafted though so it's also possible you're just SOL. Last time they upped the speeds we got left in the cold so I'm happy to report that this time around we got the speed increase. One more note, you need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to see speeds above 38Mbps so if you are on an older modem this would be a good time to upgrade from DOCSIS 2.0 to take advantage of the speeds for which you are already paying. Thanks to this promo I found out my buddy has a modem that was discontinued in 2009 and was constantly wasting time on the phone w/idiot Comcast reps who never could tell him why his speeds were so slow. In addition, it was a modem/wireless router combo which are complete trash. If you have a setup like this do yourself a favor and get a quality modem (Retail will be $70 at Best Buy with deals often putting them under $50) and a quality wireless modem as two separate components. The majority of the internet problems I've seen in residential areas are these combined devices that blow goats.

From what I've seen, the reboot is necessary. The way we see the bootfiles did not change, so it must have been a frequency change, the modems would need reboot to adjust.

Mine didn't. I specifically tested prior to rebooting to find out if it was required. I've been using Comcrap (and previously AT&T) for cable internet since the mid 90's and every speed increase required a reboot before this one. Two days ago I ran a speed test and got nearly 100Mbps down w/o doing a reboot when prior to I would see ~50Mbps. I rebooted after that as I had a window when I could take my network offline and it hadn't been done in a while anyway and after that I had to reboot several times to get it to even work properly. I'm not sure why it allowed the speed increase w/o a reboot but I'm even more puzzled as to why it took several reboots to work properly after the fact. Like I said, check your speed first and if you don't have it and don't live in Fort Collins reboot and test again.
