Not good for anyone involved !!!!
Love AU, the town too, not just the sports.
I've used that exact phrase with my kids for years (just used it again 2 weeks ago).
Bad things happen to otherwise good people who find themselves where they shouldn't be during bad hours.
Things have indeed changed. Fist fights are the rarity. Guns and knives are considerably more common in a fight situation than when I grew up and when I was into the club scene.
Far too dangerous anymore.
That's sad.. never like to see talent wasted.
My little sister goes to AU.
However, being an Alabama fan..
Still sad. [Coffee]
OK, this is a tragedy to be sure. Nobody deserves to be gunned down like this because of an argument "over a woman".
I do have a bit of a problem with the way it was covered by ESPN. Sure they are a sports news outlet, bet jeeeez.
They go over the top to spell out the name and the football positions played by every football player involved, but it wasn't until the 12th paragraph that any of the others that were killed were even mentioned by name.
If I was killed would they have mentioned in the first 10 paragraphs, "John was a recently laid off poker room manager who was desperately looking for work to support his family"? Nah, it would have just been, "John, a Gilpin County resident, was also killed" a dozen paragraphs down.
What if the football payers were to blame here? It's possible. I was a football player, so I have no axe to grind here. And I knew some seriously assholish football players too. Just seems way biased to me.
Either way, God Bless those who were killed senselessly. What a shame. [Rant1]
There's been fistfights between humans as long as there's been humans. But humans have been carrying and using handguns ever since they were invented. Ever seen how many types of pocket pistols there are in museums? People have been shooting each other in fights for hundreds of years, ain't nothing new. Just getting to be more common is all, and more shots can be fired quicker. Egos seem to be getting bigger too.
Lessons learned:
1) Don't go to house parties (this especially applies if you're an individual of high profile)
2) Don't be out after midnight as that's when the bad shit seems to happen. People have been drinking for hours and their night may not have gone how they planned.
3) Starting shit with someone may cost you your life. Don't be a dick and you may live.
People have the right to peacefully enjoy their lives w/o the fear of physical assault and these days people are (legally) exercising their rights to protect themselves. Has nothing to do with 'When I was a boy, we just fought and then had a beer afterward' mentality you hear. When you're 21 and you're out at a bar and some drunk asshole picks a fight with some dude you're with and hits him once, only once and the dude falls to the concrete hitting his head and died hours later you start to rethink how 'manly' fist fighting is. I think it's ignorant for people to fight and that's not to say I can't hold my own... I choose not to. I've chose a peaceful life and will defend that choice with deadly force if need be. I avoid all situations that are known to have a higher likelihood of these types of occurrences because I know that I've already made the choice to not fight. I used to get a LOT of people picking a fight with me when I would go out to clubs because of my size, my haircut, my attention from the ladies... I don't know what it was. Whatever the cause, I ALWAYS had dudes trying to pick fights with me when I was just out having a good time with my buddies. This is why I don't go to clubs anymore. Should I have to take this stance when I'm not looking for trouble? Hell no. That doesn't mean I'm going to change it and have realized there are FAR more important things in life. Sometimes you just have to accept situations or people for what they are, stop trying to change them and simply remove yourself from those situations in the name of self preservation.
BTW, when I played football we didn't go to house parties filled with randoms for the exact reasons mentioned in this thread.
WHAT TALENT??????????????
They are former football players.. Not much talent if they no longer are in the game.
Party went bad, altercation ensued, one of the victims friends ADMITS he hit one of the guys AND the dead victim broke a bottle over 1 if not 2 heads. HARDLY innocence on their part.
If anything had anyone of us been in a situation like this, where we were attacked, the GOOD SHOOT responses would be overwhelming.
nothing like killing someone over some girl you wont even talk to in a month. some real brainiacs
Agreed. I don't see how this story is any different other than the majority of us probably wouldn't have been there in the first place through better judgement.
If I understand the facts correctly as presented it sounds to me like someone was killed out of self defense. Sounds like a dude tried to assault the wrong dude with a deadly weapon and came out on the losing end of poor judgement. Everyone is responsible for their own actions so choose wisely.
