Within the first 60 seconds of the power outage tonight, one of the neighbor's car alarms went off. That put me a little on edge at first. Your in-laws' neighborhood sounds like my neighborhood.

What makes a lot of sense is having your gas-fired furnace wired so you can attach a small generator to it to power its thermostat and fans through a power outage. This makes more sense that going to the trouble and greater expense to wire up a larger generator connection for all of your home's power with a full blown transfer switch.

I was thinking that a small natural gas generator in the attic (so it could easily be exhausted outside, and not so loud in the house or outside) would do the trick for that.
