We moved my Brothers Gun Safe to his basement and he took off the door to lighten the load. We used a appliance dolly to get it to the top of the stairs then disconnected it and slid it on it's back. As long as your stairs are carpeted, 3 guys can handle it easily. It's getting it back up the stairs that will be the pain in the arse...

Is it reasonable to slide it in on its back into the Suburban, or is this something that I'm going to have to get an open bed pickup for? I would recommend a pickup with a lift gate. Pretty sure you can rent them.
Or a trailer with ramps. Thats how I did it. This method also moves large tool boxes full of tools real nice.
#1. I'm too old and fat to try it myself, I'd definitely hire it done. I have enough aches and pains, thank you.
#2. I'd be scared to death that the stairs wouldn't handle the weight of the safe and all the necessary grunts. I've read horror stories of collapsed stairs and mangled bodies.
If I bought a big safe for my basement, I'd go with one from Zanotti Armor. They come in 6 pieces, plus the optional interior package however you want it. You tote the parts downstairs, then assemble it in place.
