CBI Implements Plan to Reduce Queue for Firearms Checks
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has implemented a plan to clear the existing queue by redirecting resources within the Bureau (excluding those who process employment/civil background checks) and extending InstaCheck’s operating hours beginning on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.
The effort to redirect CBI resources at this time is based on CBI’s evaluation of an existing window of opportunity to effectively clear the extended queue.
While the average for requests for firearms background checks topped 1,100 per day in January 2013 (much higher compared to recent years), CBI had projected levels of 1,500 per day. This slight reduction will enable the current InstaCheck team—with assistance from other CBI staff—to clear the existing queue in an expedited manner.
CBI will closely monitor the progress of those working to clear the existing queue. It’s believed the queue can be cleared in a short period of time, barring additional surges in requests for background checks for firearms purchases.
“We’ve constantly been monitoring the volume of requests for background checks and believe a window of opportunity currently exists to implement a plan to make tremendous headway in reducing the existing queue for background checks for firearms purchases,” said Director Ron Sloan of CBI. “We believe redirecting staffing for a minimal period of time will not adversely affect the service delivery of other CBI work units.”
Snapshot of the Plan:
· Utilize the existing InstaCheck staff (21 people) to conduct background checks.
· Redirect staffing (16 people) from other CBI workgroups (not including those who conduct employment/civil background checks) to assist in the process.
· Extend InstaCheck hours of operation to 16 hours a day (6:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.)
· Any overtime utilized to augment staffing will be covered through vacancy/salary savings within the current budget.
Director Sloan stresses this is a short term solution to address the existing queue and meet the needs of licensed firearms dealers and their customers, while balancing the critical role in public safety the background checks provide.
CBI will continue to work within the legislative process to address future resource needs.
So the government saw a problem and fixed it...............these really are the end times! panic!!!!!!!!!! LOL.
I thought the reason that the NRA came to town a few days ago was to meet with the governor regarding the current waiting time. Does anyone know if this is true?
I hope it gets back to a 15 to 30 minute wait again soon
Let me revise my statement. "there are no decently priced guns left in Colorado" (sarcasm)
No offense but I won't step foot inside a gun show any time soon, I gave up on them a while ago (pre panic). Maybe I am expecting better deals at gun shows but to be honest I haven't bought anything at a show in years. Could always find better prices locally.
So did they take the staff that should be processing CCW permits and move them to instacheck?
I'm concerned that the 90 day CCW wait is now going to be 120 days because all the staff is working on instacheck. I still don't understand why CO has to have their own system when almost every other state including states with the toughest gun control laws on the book use the NICS with no problems.
Anyone know where BGC'S are today, or where i can see an updated number on line? CBI Facebook page not updated regularly.
Based on yesterday- I fully expect the backlog to be cleared up in just a couple of days. This will certainly result in long lines at the counter as people roll in to pick up their guns. Please be patient!
4078 as I type this, less than 4 days as the longest wait.
I didn't think it was possible that I'd be more pissed at CBI, but it happened. Fuck them. It will be back under the federally mandated 3 days just in time for the vote for more gun control.
Mine just came through after 12 days...
48hrs! Sportsmans just called said I'm good to pick up. Cbi fb page said as of yesterday they extended their hours again.
If you don't pay a traffic ticket they issue a warrant for your arrest. It's not CBI's problem that it is "only" for a traffic ticket. It's still a WARRANT FOR ARREST.
When someone has a warrant for their arrest they get pulled over by a cop they go to jail. do some research. Cops have been killed in traffic stops by guys that had traffic warrants and nothing more and didn't want to go to jail .
Now I'm not saying that YOU or the original person that brought this up would shoot a cop. I'm just saying it is a reason to deny a purchase.
Besides I'm sure as soon as he took care of the warrant they dropped the denial.
you seem fine with denying someone gun purchase becasue they failed to pay a ticket and have a warrant for their arrest. I am not. I think it is retarded that you should be denied a gun purchase becasue you didn't pay a fee to the state for a traffic violation. You can go on about warrant for arrest all you want, but the base reason is a traffic violation
Maybe, just maybe, stop issuing arrest warrants and sending people to jail becasue some bloke didn't hand over a hundred bucks or whatever to the state for a frikken traffic violation in a timely manner.
Nah. That's crazy talk I know.
What, then, would you recommend then to get people to pay for the traffic tickets, if not the threat of jail time? I mean, if you get a ticket and there is no recourse from the state if you don't pay, why pay? Don't you think the state needs something in place that will prompt people to pay the fine? Seems the threat of jail would do that pretty well.Quote:

I'm Ok with CBI denying for a warrant.. it's not their problem what the warrant is for . Would you be OK if the warrant was for murder? or rape ? or ( insert laundry list of offenses here) ?
We all sit here and scream about how we are responsible gun owners. well not taking care of your legal obligations is not being responsible.
Hey I've had a couple of warrants for traffic.... I've also gone to jail on them ( this was back when I was young and dumb and thought my car had two speeds.. stop and top .... I was a bit of a lead foot)
Get a ticket you have 3 options.... Pay it , Go to court to fight it ( win or lose) or ignore it and have a warrant for your arrest issued... they will catch you .. eventually . Arrest warrants for not showing up in court is the courts only recourse when you don't show up. this is how it works .. no matter the offense, It's " ALWAYS" been this way .
What would you suggest they do when you don't show up in court ?
Just like we all learned in elementary school if your parent(s) didn't already teach you... follow the rules and you can participate with all the others. Think the rules don't apply to you and you can do it the hard way. If you didn't learn it then I guess you'll have to learn it now.
I personally don't know of any responsible people that don't pay their tickets and I like the idea that irresponsible people get held up by the background check.
Longest Wait : 1 days 2:43 Applications Waiting : 1904
as of 1630 today
Damn why couldn't they do this 4 gun shows ago?
The state will compile the costs of the InstaCheck showing the funds recently spent including the staff and employee overtime.
My new Sig came into my FFL and I went down to fill out the paperwork and it was 1 day and 2 hours.
I guess it's OK that they were gaming gun owners with their fictitious "delays". Our rulers won't find any fault in what has become obvious that they were doing. The end justifies the means with these people.
Although not exceptionally surprised after hearing of the push to clear the backlog by adding/re-purposing staff and hours, I was not exactly expecting the call I got today for a BGC I filled out Saturday.
I thought I saw somewhere that 85% of the failed BGC were passed on do-overs.
I don't doubt they failed some that have no business possessing a firearm, but to think that some crazy neighbor or other such asshat could potentially go and get a temp restraining order against a good honest and lawful citizen and ruin your chance at passing the BGC bothers me.
Where's the due process in that?
Hypocrites.
