#6 makes me laugh, as if an FFL doesn't already have that down to a science at this point, between the panic buys and GB/GA sales, I'm pretty sure they have it figured out. :facepalm
IMHO HE PUNTED THE WHOLE ISSUE
after all the chest puffing and prancing around i don't see any teeth in this at all, a bunch of pablum and preening of feather for the anti's...
the panic will continue until congress grows a pair and tells him to STFU, more important to call and write your reps, it is in their court now
which i feel is even more dangerous, An EO we can defeat, if congress lays down it will be hard to undo.
the mental health items seem like common sense, sad that we have to have EOs to get things moving if it will at all.
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
SO WE HAVE TO TELL THE AGENCIES HOW TO DO THEIR JOBS, WTF THIS IS PABULUM
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
so we will now make sure, i see this backfiring as fewer people will seek treatment
3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
why would there be disincentive?
4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
this is pretty vague, what category are you?
5. Propose rule making to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
i would have expected the police to do this anyway, would they not run a check on you if you gave them reason to seize your gun?
6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
pretty sure they already know how to do this, more Pabulum
7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
be sure your weapon is totally locked away so it is impossible to use for any purpose, this will be an issue
8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
see response above, better hope your gun never gets stolen, you will be held responsible for the damage IT DID
9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
dont sell anything you bought on 4473, it may come back to bite you you owned it at one time, you are the criminal
10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
lets all get together and talk about it some more, they will what? run every gun you own through the data base to see if it was ever stolen?
11. Nominate an ATF director.
thought we would have done that anyway
12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
they are called swat teams, some jurisdictions may not have one, but the cops already practice this one do they not.
school officials need to grasp the idea that some teachers need to be armed. after all that may actually save just one kid
13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
enforcement of what? what gun laws when enforced more vigorously would have prevented sandyhook?
14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
this will take years, my wife is heavily involved in medical research and treatment development, nothing in this field moves quickly,
15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.
gun safety technologies? you will be able to kill fewer people if all guns were black powder flint locks. you will have to have a fingerprint lock on all weapons so that the weapon can only be fired by the registered user.
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
obamacare to the rescue, WTF.Unless you have confessed this tidbit to your shrink and you are bat shit crazy, it will not make us safer
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
do they really believe that they cannot report something?
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
unless they are armed this is useless.
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
duck and cover drills, i can see it now,
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
clarifying or expanding the scope?
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.
23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health
the last three are the only items on this list besides maybe providing guards at schools that will make us any safer. if you can treat a few people who are dangerous you may stop one or two, however if you are just going to prescribe drugs to more people we are screwed, how many shootings occurred when people were being treated for depression, RITALIN AND ZANEX wont help
#3, there are costs and privacy issues (see #2)
#6, perhaps they mean a procedure for transferring a firearm not in their possession or how to run a check without a 4473 to go with it.
#8 CPSC cannot regulate guns or ammunition but they can regulate locks. Hey if this means objective numbers on the relative merits of different safes, cool.
#15 love to see this report but don't trust it to be unbiased. Far as I know, no tech out there is reliable enough to even be considered for this.
#18 agreed.
#20 doubt that the scope could be expanded by EO.
I do see all this focus on mental health driving people away from treatment. have to tread carefully there and they are running around in boots.
Its all a huge invasion of privacy, yes it could've been worse but not only is he trying to turn the country against gun owners but hes trying to turn it against conservatives too. By him putting the awb, magazine restrictions and everything else on congress's shoulders which is dominated by republicans he knows it will probably not pass. So then hes going to come out and say they dont care about kids or their fellow citizens because they voted his suggested gun control measures down. Hes already blaming republicans on national tv for a wide variety of issues and this will be another one. I dont think congress will pass majority of his recommendations this time but what i am worried about is if he does turn the country against republicans and the house gets dominated by democrats thats when were fucked. They will probably vote on this issue again. I was talking to my neighbor the other day who is all for gun control so obviously we were arguing about it he couldnt give me any reason other than the president said that thats what we need to do and hes our leader and we need to listen to him, typical liberal response. I told him welcome to communism and left.
And if my doctor ever ask me about firearms im going to tell him its none of his fucking business.
Why does BHO need to turn Americans against the Republican party when they're doing a good enough job of that on their own?
I don't see how that's possible. The GOP has completely lost touch with it's voter base as evidenced by their inability to win an election they almost had to try to lose. And try they did. To me, this is the smallest among our concerns of the current anti-2A temperature. Keep talking about how relevant or irrelevant the GOP is in today's political landscape though, I'm sure the anti-2A crowd would LOVE for that to happen.
The Dems are solidifying their base no matter how idiotic their proposals or moves are because all they have to do is make them feel like they're activists. It's not so much the GOP losing touch with its base as too much of the "base" disappearing because their own little personal issue (homosexual marriage, smoking weed, free access to condoms or abortions or ...., etc.) is more important to them than Constitutional government, the Second Amendment, fiscal responsibility, American traditions, etc.
Many of you have essentially admitted access to marijuana was more important to you than the Second Amendment because you chose to vote third party or not vote at all despite the well-documented fact that Obama wanted to find an excuse to gut the Second Amendment (among other things). You can rationalize all you want but that was the predictable (hell, PREDICTED) outcome of not doing everything necessary to defeat Obama. That's fine, that's your choice but don't go blaming the Republicans for it.
