Riding my bike to the gas station to get 2 packs of smokes for my Dad (about 2 miles). Either got change for the dollar he sent with me, or had to endure the ribbing from Del (gas station owner), because I was sent without any money (always went home with smokes though). Bought more cigs before I was 8 or 10 than some casual smokers. have in their lifetime.
Can't even let your kids ride down to the end of the block anymore, without supervision.
BTW My Dad quit smoking quite some time ago, and is still a work horse, in his mid 70's. It only took him retiring 3 times, before it finally stuck.
ETA: At least where I grew up, you were also guaranteed to be able to find at least 1 box of .22 rimfire rattling around in the glove box and/or ashtray. But back then, most people used their ashtray for ashes, so it was usually between 30-150 rds in the glove box.

I wasn't earning as much back then but I sure wish I'd bought fewer VHS tapes and put the money toward buying a gun or two back then.
Geez, I didn't realize how many geezers there is on this forum.
