Question for you girly-man types

I always drove an old truck until 2009 when I got a job working off-shore in 2009 and needed something reliable with better gas mileage for my weekly 5 hour commute, and ended up with a 2008 WRX. I don't really miss the truck and just rent a u haul the once every couple years I just can't do without. I do have a old bronco 4x4 that I use for hunting/finshing/off road use once in a blue moon, but with the seats down and the roof rack on the Subaru I can carry just about anything I need to outside of furniture or a large load of lumber.

It also aggravates the shit out of me that I can't buy a half ton truck with a manual transmission anymore. Think the newest one I've ever found was a 97 F-150 I owned for a while. It didn't even have a steering wheel tilt, much less power locks/windows etc. The new trucks all seem to be these leather heated seats, power everything, 4 door, why not just buy a Cadillac monstrosities. Seriously if you are going to drop $40K on a new truck with all the extra bullshit why not just buy a caddy and have a super comfortable ride.

If I could go down to the lot and get a regular cab truck with a bench seat, a 5-speed and roll up windows, that didn't cost half of my mortgage I might own one again. They're supposed to be for work not a luxury vehicle.

Yup, 6 speed manual in my Ram. I had an auto once, put a SM465 4 speed in it 3 months later.

Hmmm.. I work construction, I have yet to see half the guys with trucks ever actually put anything in the bed.. Might scratch it. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and it's pretty amazing how much stuff I can load up inside and on top of the cargo cage.

Didn't know this thread would take off like it did. Oh, and I didn't mean to belittle anyone who doesn't own a truck. Regardless of how I worded the title.

It just seems like every time I turn around I am using my truck for something. Hauling lumber for fence repairs, buying new appliances or furniture, etc. Even if I only used my truck for truck type stuff five or six times a year it just seems it would be more convenient to own one than to rent or borrow something.

I definitely understand they could be a bit expensive to operate as a daily commuter. I suppose if I only had one vehicle and had to drive it every day a truck might not make much sense I guess. Fortunately, my truck only gets driven maybe four or five thousand miles a year.

Was is a special order? Or did you convert it yourself? Or is it old? Last time I was car shopping I couldn't find one in any brand on a lot and the Toyota place said they couldn't even order one. Some bs about how they just got whatever the factory sent. That was one of my first stops.

What I have. Diesel that gets 18 in town as well. I will say since the camper is gone I may sell the "TEOTWAWKI" hauler (12v). Most everything I would need one for can be met with a trailer hooked to the back of something. Almost always had a truck but I did go through my "wagon" phase. Since I did grow up with an El Camino and since these are a local product something like this may work. [Flower]Attachment 47701

Had a 92 f150 long bed....used it a lot for work. But decided I needed a kid mover. Cr-v ain't too bad. It was nice to throw anything I wanted back there. Downside is I've accumulated too much crap!

I'm sorry to read that Ray1970 can't get it up unless he owns a big truck. There are meds to help with that condition these days.

I happen to own an F150 for hauling shit around, but I haven't had it very long. Before that, (after a big gap) it was a 4cyl "Ford Ranger" which is like a "Ford Fiesta" with a pickup bed instead of a back seat.

You have to be careful before tying your manhood to just having something with a bed in the back... Hell VW made a sort-of pickup at one time, too.

My own POV's are a Challenger and a 84' Ramcharger...I don't know where this "girlyman" stigma comes from [Coffee].

I just need a trailer for the 84'...

Personally never owned a pick up truck. I've never even owned SUV's either.

I had a company vehicle Ford F150 truck which I was allowed to use as a personal vehicle as a package deal. It was real nice. I didn't need Uhaul or any rental truck for hauling.

I don't own a truck. I have before, just because it had wheels and went down the road. I understand that trucks are very practical, and for some necessary. I look at it this way. If I need a truck to haul it, I don't need it. Aside from moving, which often requires a very large truck, i.e. u-haul, there is no need to move a very large object.

Guns fit in pockets or waistbands. Beer fits in a backpack. Women fit on the back of motorcycles. So what the hell do I need a truck for? The shit you own ends up owning you. If you NEED a truck, then detach yourself from whatever it is you NEED that requires a truck to move. Good things come in small packages. I've never had to put my motorcycle on a truck, as I've never owned a harley (had to get that in somewhere). Maintenance and repairs can be done at home, parts for bikes are small.

A truck for me would be a secondary vehicle I would be using mostly for towing which at this point in my life I can't afford it. I rather putt around town in a beater than have a nice truck to drive daily, so I can put more money towards fun stuff (fun car, guns, etc.)

I recently purchased a pickup truck and it's been great! If you don't have one, you just find ways to make due. Either that or I used to borrow my dad's pickup. That's honestly it.

Many of my guns are bigger than a pocket, beer that will fit in a backpack is NOT enough beer and you can only fit one woman on the back of a motorcycle (hard work getting the one without the Harley, you might not like 'em but ladies love 'em). If you don't have a truck you're paying someone else to haul your crap, ever carried a TV on a motorcycle? Not fun. "Light and tight" was okay for my twenties, the wife, the dogs, the grandkids, etc. sort of kill that gypsy lifestyle.

Nope. It's a 2006 and bought it used 2.5 years ago. :shrugs: Any Tacoma 05 and later had the option, as far as I know.

Mow your own lawn? When I got my first house, that mower didn't come home in the trunk of a car. Do other yard maintenance? That aspen you just cut down won't get to the recycle on the back of your bike.

Grow your own food? Try fitting a couple yards of garden soil in a car. Try fitting landscape timbers for raised beds in your car.

Own a yard? Want to build patio with your own hands and not hired help? How you going to get your pavers, sand and breeze home without a truck?

Own a house? Want to remodel/make improvements? Drywall, counter-tops, loads of 2x4's, etc don't get to your house in a 2-door.

Do you hunt to put food in your freezer? Ever drive a car through 2ft of snow and mud deep into the mountains during hunting season to get to camp? Ever fit an elk in a hatchback?

These things are all "needs" that are directly associated to my self-sufficiency which is something I am not willing to "detach" myself from. These large things do not own me, but free me from being dependant on others. If I only had a car and motorcycle, my meat and veggies would all only come from the store, my yard would only be kept by a hired hand and my home and yard would only be improved by a contractor...No thank you.

Started driving Jeeps at 18. Got a Ford half ton at 23, immediately sold that for a big boy truck and went back to master race Mopar. I wouldn't go back to driving cars if you paid me.

Those guys with the Datsun would be in trouble if they shot something.

I thought I was prepared with a truck until my buddy shot a 6x6 (scored 355) this last season and that bull's head wouldn't fit in the truck bed with the shell on. Luckily he had a trailer.

The shell also doesn't help when I go get landscape materials...have to load by hand.

But I still love the shell because it is much more useful day-to-day...pick your battles I guess.

I had to ditch my first truck when the 2nd kid arrived, single cab, cannot safely fit everyone in it. Pretty sad day for me.

Replaced with a 99 dodge caravan, always said I'd never buy one, but it turns out to be the best choice for the family. (at that time anyways)

24 2x4's would fit under the seats of that Caravan, it was designed that way. I put a hitch on it and towed the utility trailer for home depot runs. Worked out for many years.

Had to find a truck so we could get a new camper and take the kids on camping trips.

Now I own an older truck, but end up renting a truck for some of the family outings. They like air conditioning that works, radio that works and no breakdowns.

Last trip just a couple weekends ago, I ended up with a FORD rental. Not my first choice, but it treated us well. Diesel power is amazing.
