When I was active in Scouting, our troop had a trailer that was never used. They parked it on my property until they could figure out what to do with it. 4 years later when I was retiring from Scouting and wanted it off my lawn, we had to get plates. I explained the situation to the El Paso Clerk and Recorder's Office and they suggested the following:

1. Transfer title from the troop to me.
2. Plate the trailer in my name -- no back fees because it's a new registration.
3. Transfer title from me back to the troop.

I forget how much it cost, think less than $100 all told.

That might work with a $500 trailer.

Unfortunately, you cannot simply sell for $1 and expect to not pay. CO DMV charges based on original MSRP, pro-rated down through the years. Perhaps on something really really old that might work. You'll only avoid those back fees.

BTW, WTF happened to the "maximum $100" that was supposed to be?

For reference:
I just plated a 2000 Chevy Silverado in Arapahoe Cty.
Sale price reported on the title was $1000. Ownership tax was $3 (typical for age). State sales tax was $29. Total was $193-ish, out the door.
I'm fairly confident that the amount of sales tax would have increased proportionally to the sale price. Also, there was a ~$10 fee (going off memory here) for "age of vehicle add-on fee", or some such nonsense.
I, like the rest of you, find all the nonsense fees and charges ridiculous, but getting out of the DMV for under $200 (and less than 15 minutes) was almost pleasant.

Btw, I've had a clerk explain that if your registration is 12 months or less late, it will only renew to the original expiration date... e.g. if you are 11 months late registering, and pay $600 to renew, it will last exactly..... one flipping month - then you owe another $600.

But, if you wait until the 13th month, and renew, then it goes to the anniversary + one year. For the same price, you can get something like 23 months of registration. Now, I might have misunderstood it and it might just add 12 months, but I'm 99% that happened previously when I renewed my old cycle... pretty sure I got something like 17-18 months, but it was a few years late.

So yeah, over here on this side of the state, you can bet a lot of my stuff goes to about 14 months expired. Gotta love the genius of this state, punishing late, but rewarding "later".

Somewhat off topic, but my tags expired in November (I milk the one month grace period, so good through December), but I'm likely moving out of state in February or March, I'm assuming they refund me? Or how does that work?

My point was providing a workaround for all the back fees for unregistered years. When you finally do register it, the fees for that year will be based on CO DMV's formula for adjusted MSRP but they won't charge back fees for unregistered years since it's a transfer. When the title is transferred again, they've already collected the fees on the vehicle for that year (then again, with the Democrats in charge, they very well might want to charge again). If that's the case, wait until the following year's registration to transfer again. Of course, this only works if you have someone you trust (like a spouse) to hold the title and registration.

I pay online for expresstoll. Funny thing is before I bought my truck this year, the expresstoll collection people (linebarger goggan blair & sampson) were sending me bills for my previous truck. It always had a company rfid from them on the company account. I got a bill for $600+. Funny thing is that truck was never in my name. I challenged them on it. I got my first expresstoll account when I purchased my new truck. I always carry a credit and rarely use the toll road. Lo' and behold I got a bill recently with late charges from linescammers for my new truck. I called Expresstoll and still had a credit. So I sent the scammers a letter and haven't heard from them since. If they report a collection on me I will refute it with all of the agencies and file a fraud suit against them.
