I think this is where the give and take part would come in. I am for background checks on all purchases... Fine, it's fifteen minutes to an extra hour out of my time. However, if you are required to do this, I think they should give up the coat carry tax. You want to make me keep proving that I am legal to purchase a firearm every damn time, you know I'm legal to carry it and shouldn't have to pay an extra fee to do so concealed. I guess that I don't really care that much because I don't have to pay a ridiculous ammount of money to get a transfer done either..... Like I said though, if they don't want to give anything up, I don't want to give anything up.
i have a hard time watching anything with piers morgan in it. the debate is a very good one with piers being given whats for yes, but there is something about the man that I find absolutely and utterly revolting.
For people who keep talking about private party sales.... you live in or near a largely populated area.. don't you? I do as well and while this area isn't huge it's populated enough to have more than a few choices for FFL transfers and as such there is a spread on both price and customer service so there's something for everyone. I have to think of my buddy who, much like a LOT of gun owners across this country, live in a more remote area. He basically has to drive an hour to get to the only FFL within about 6 hrs of his location and that FFL fella charges and absurd rate for transfers and takes FOREVER to do anything. It's bad enough that my buddy who is a HUGE lover of guns with the means to purchase said guns rarely does so anymore. Just too much crap to jump through for something as simple as a transfer. He deals only with private individuals in his state (would rather drive 8hrs across the state to buy from a private individual than mess with dealers) and as such is stuck with whatever is available at whatever price. Not a very fun situation to be in. But take that from him and the others like him and things are a little more dire than they would be for someone like you or me where a FFL transfer is simply an issue of a little more time and a little more money. We've got it pretty good compared to those who don't have it like us.
In spirit of full disclosure, I don't feel like background checks do very much to protect us from the bad guys of the world. But that's another thread entirely.
Requiring background checks for private sales isn't going to stop or prevent a felon from getting their hands on guns. It's ignorant to think that it will solve the problem, much like thinking that an out right ban on weapons will stop gun violence.
Consider the source. Piers isn't even an American.
