I have bought several firearms and numerous other items from Jensen Arms, never had a bad experience. Bought my first AR there when they were still on 4th Street. I go there frequently since they are only 5 minutes form my house.
I took my friend there to purchase his first handgun. Being a total noob he wanted to check out pretty much everything in the case. We spent about 30 minutes narrowing down the choices before he finally purchased a CZ. The employee was very knowledgeable and patient with us the whole time.
i'll give my report: I've been there twice, and have had good experiences both times, one just slightly better than the other.
The first was early 2010. Nobody asked if i needed anything, but when i did ask a question, it was answered very helpfully. No rudeness at all.
Second time was the saturday before mothers' day 2011. the place was packed, but two employees came up and asked if i needed help--very polite, very helpful. they didn't have what i wanted, but it was certainly not a negative experience.
But--do they charge 3% upcharge on Credit Cards?
I don't know if they do or not vs. their posted price, but every vendor that takes credit cards in payment for goods or services pays about 2 to 3% on every transaction. That margin gets added to the price one way or another.
The credit card up charge is an old policy.
I have shopped with Jensens for about 11 years and three locations. I'm sure that I have had over a hundred visits. I have noticed a change in the demeanor of the employees for the better. Also Dave the guy that is the Web Sale guy and Jensen Arms here is top shelf. Deal with Dave with confidence. Give them another chance. Also all of their pricing is very competitive.
No CC up charge on any item in the retail store.

First ever visit last Friday...
Fantastic selection, busy, but knowledgable and courteous staff. I understand why people travel to visit this shop. I found all items I went in for and a few I didn't know I needed ;) Decent selection of handgun ammo... could offer more- but it was competitively priced. extensive rifle ammo - reasonable prices. Awesome selection of accessories, clothing, firearms and military items.
I dig it and I'll be back this week.
another great report: knew what i wanted--didn't need to shop, andt my only opportunity was to go on Saturday. Of course, there's the 3 deep layer of lookers, salivators, and BSers' at the gun counter. i stood, waiting my turn, and the very nice guy behind the counter recognized what probably was a little irritation on my face--i told him what i wanted, and was out of there in a very short amount of time.
i've got no problem with folks that have absolutely no intention of buying anything spending time setting up camp at the counter, but this clerk was able to see through the goobs and make a sale. i can't tell you how many sales have been left on the counter in situations like that at other stores.
I have had nothing but great experiences at Jensens. Staff there is always courteous and helpful to me. Can't count the number of times while browsing around the store their people come up to me and ask if I needed any help. Sometime I did, sometimes I didn't.
When I was looking for a specific model of Buckmark (Hunter), Jensens didn't have it in stock. Bob took me in his supply room to show me the selection he had - pretty much every model except the Hunter! Unfortunately, they couldn't find that model anywhere. In return for buying thru Gunbroker and using Jensens for FFL, I got a nice in-store discount that I used for magazines and supplies - more than fair. I'll be buying there again.

I'm fully aware of Jensen"s piss poor atittude and service but I always end up giving them another chance. Its about a 50/50 shot with me. Sometimes they're tolerable and sometimes they're not...
Well, went to look at some optics today cause I'm gonna be buying one real soon. Was looking at a little trijicon red dot and asked the young kid there if he's had any experience with them.
Reply was, " I've got bigger fish to fry than this little thing" in a real elitist attitude I might add.
"Oh, OK asshole. I'll spend my $500 else where."
I wish I actually said that.
Called today looking for a specific revolver for a retired teacher. I am looking to see if you have any 638's in stock.

Real shitty CS.
If they had the only gun in town i wanted, i'd eat a transfer fee before giving him any more of my money.
I don't care if you are prior service or an off duty cop. If you don't know your shit find another job.
Bob could give a shit as long as he has money in his pockets.
Hopefully something changes, sooner than later.
I have been to Jensens a few times and I have only bought one thing from them. The few times I went in to just browse everyone seemed polite except for a few people. One or two people asked me while I was browsing if I needed any help and if I did to just holler.
The only thing I bought from them was a stripped lower. While the BG was going they were more than happy to let me check out the stuff behind the counter. That was just my experience YMMV.
FWIW:
Stopped in and had a talk with Mike Rigg regarding some of the less than stellar service i (personally) had received in the past.
We had a nice talk and feel a new leaf is being turned over at Jensens.
Mike asked me and to also pass along, since this site has a lot of members this. If you feel you did not receive good CS and or have an issue PLEASE talk to him. Without Mike being made aware of the situation nothing can be done to resolve any issues then and or the future.
I have to agree that Jensen's seems to be turning over a new leaf in regard to customer service. I took a friend up there recently to check out a Saiga 12 and all the AR parts/accessories they have in stock, and I actually warned him that the people who work there aren't very friendly and not to take it personally. To my surprise, however, the young man behind the counter was very friendly/helpful, and we ended up shooting the shit with him for quite awhile. When all was said and done I ended up dropping a few hundred dollars I'd planned on spending elsewhere.
Jensen Arms now has a new owner.
It took long enough. My experiences have been mixed over the years. Talked to Mike about it and a month or so ago was informed of the "change" coming up. 3 weeks ago called and talked to brendan? who not only told me 1 was on the shelf but put me on hold for a sec. He then came back, informed me they had 2 more in the back AND what the price was! Something i had to pry out of past employees.
I won't be transferring any firearms to Jensen Arms anymore. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars in cash at that place and everyone there knows me by name... well, save for the new owner (whom I've met) and the new girl at the front counter. I rarely need to transfer stuff that I don't buy there but when I do they've just done it for me for free in the past which is good for business since there are usually hundreds of dollars worth of additional items on the same ticket. Recently I bought three receivers and contacted them and told them I had three receivers I needed to transfer. No problem was the response and the FFL was faxed to the vendor. About a week later I see they are delivered by the tracking number while I'm headed to Fort Collins so I thought I would stop by to fill out the 4473 so that while I was running my errands they could clear me so I could pick them up when I was done hours later. Figured it would be easier for them that way too since I wouldn't be waiting around the store or adding pressure about getting me taken care of. I arrive and am promptly told that they have checked in 73 shipments in the last 24hrs and haven't even put a dent in the pile of shipments. Said they wouldn't even know where my box is. Okay, bummer. You'd think spirits would be higher with a business that successful. Whatever. I had hoped to get it taken care of but they're busy and hey.. they don't charge me so I'm willing to be patient and work with them during their busy (ie. money making) time. A couple days later I get a call and am told I can come do a background for my transfer. I head down and fill out the form and am told the lead time is 45min. No problem, I'll just wait so I don't have to leave and come back and it's not quite lunch time yet so I'm not hungry. I walk around the place for a bit and everyone chats me up since we all know each other by name which I've come to appreciate over the years. I've spent a load of money there but I like to think that we genuinely get along and I'm not just a wallet filled with 100's walking into the door... or at least that's what I thought anyway. So fast forward a couple hours and not only am I still sitting in the store but I get to hear this new girl telling person after person that the lead time is 45min when I'm obviously still sitting in the store and have been for almost 3x that quoted amount of time. The least she could do is use common sense to warn others that their wait times may be a bit longer even though it says 45min in case they have something better they could be doing. The longer-than-expected lead times aren't their fault but not applying common sense to a situation to better serve the customer is.
Fast forward another hour and a half (a total of three and a half hours if you're keeping track) and I finally get my name called. I come up to the register thinking I will just sign, get my receivers and as usual I have additional items to add to the sales ticket. At that point I'm told my total is $75 more than I guestimated for my accessories. I ask and am told in a rather snappy tone that it's $25 PER transfer for the three receivers. I'm stunned as this has never been asked of me. She takes a phone call at that moment (more great customer service as I'm standing at the register cash in hand) so I then ask Bri next to her if this is something new. She snaps at me too and says that they're on a computer system now so they can't do them for free anymore and makes it seem like I should just know. She then tells me that she will waive it this time but from now on I will have to pay a transfer fee. Fine, I understand and will consider that before I make my next purchase. She then tells her to charge me only a $25 fee for the entire transfer. Really? How is that waiving it? I ask her and she says to me that that's actually a very low transfer rate if I check around. Really? Now I'm some kind of an idiot I guess. Needless to say I paid the $25 and walked out the door. I was hungry and sick of being in that damn store. I haven't been back.
Over the years I have been a Jensen Arms apologist and always the first one to rush to their defense because they've always treated me well. They've always been helpful and friendly to the point of knowing my name, family, dogs... all sorts of things. They gave me a discount on EVERYTHING I bought save for a few firearms here and there that don't have much markup. All of this I am fine with, appreciate and have come to expect. I also have given them TONS of business over the years both from my friends and family looking for items as well as my own purchases. I felt like they were taking care of me and a quick transfer one week on the house was a drop in the bucket when I came in with $10,000 cash the next week to buy three Sako TRG's. I never had to bring any of my purchases up and was always just treated like a good customer. Not looking for preferential treatment but when it's offered to me I certainly wasn't turning it down. What I would expect is some common decency to say 'Hey, I'll transfer these for you for free today since that's what we've always done for you but starting next time we'll have to charge you $25 per transfer' Fine. I'm alright with that. It's not about the money. Really. It's about the principle. What was I supposed to do tell them 'no' and to ship the receivers back? Just not good business practice the way it was handled IMO.
So, in closing... the days of stopping by Jensen Arms to say hey and just to see what they have in that's new and great that I could waste my money on I won't be happening anymore. I'm not going in there anymore. If I need something that I absolutely can't get anywhere else (pretty rare these days) then I may stop back in but the days of just wandering to find something to blow money on are over. The days of stopping in to take a friend in and help them spend money there are over. I will no longer defend Jensen Arms whenever someone says something negative about them. It seems the new management is more worried about the nickles and dimes than the dollars and I was afraid something like this might happen w/new ownership and it has already left a bad taste in my mouth.
All good things must come to an end I guess...
I'm glad that there is now Liberty Arms on Harmony and P.M. Guns & Supplies on Carpenter and 287 in Fort Collins. Sounds like one or both may do $10 transfers so I will be happy to send transfers there, get to know them and see what they have in stock that I could possibly spend my money on. Now that we have options there's no excuse for customer service like what Jensen Arms offers.
p.s. While I was waiting I even offered to give the owner, John, a special map disc for his Tundra. He has the factory navigation which locks you out from using it while the truck is in motion. Many years ago we bought one of the new Camry Hybrids which has the same navigation and when I realized the lockout I wanted it gone. I reverse engineered the firmware on the map disc to create a hidden menu to access the service menu and created a simple user interface to access it. The bottom line is that I had a LOT of time and money (map discs back when they were expensive, hacked and bricked DVD burners also when they were expensive, etc.) and I had sold them for $99 each. I lost count of how many I sold over the years to people more than happy to pay that when OEM map discs that did NOT have the override were $300. I told him that I would bring one in with the latest map software and even install it for him. Screw that. Now that I don't have a 'friend' in the industry I have no desire to hook them up either. His immediate net loss is about $75 on that and probably thousands in the weeks to follow from lost sales. Enjoy that twenty-five bucks!
^^^ That a stupid thing for them to do, no doubt. I go up there about once every 3 months and every time I go I dislike more and more of their staff. There is one guy in particular that I just flat out avoid when I am in there.
Jer... mail your post to the owner. You'll get more vs. posting it on here. On the other hand, I'm glad you posted your experience.
Jer- when you called and told them about the transfers did they say they would be free? Where you aware before you went that they were under new ownership? I don't see how you could expect the transfers to be free with a new owner but the rest of the experience is definitely not right.
No, they didn't tell me when I called they would be free. They also didn't tell me they would now be $25 per transfer either. If this is some major change for the store they need to make it apparent to customers whenever the topic comes up. It seems that when a long-time customer calls and tells you that he needs a FFL transfer that would be an opportune time to notify him of policy change that will affect how he is or isn't charged.
Agreed new ownership (of any business) sholud post and inform customers of any changes previous owners did or did not do.
To them it might not be a policy change. The few times I"d asked long in the past I was told they either don't or it's like $50 for a transfer. Your free xfer was really likely based only on your huge patronage. How often did you do these transfers because while the employee's know you they may have not had that in mind. Being snappy though is never good.
Exactly. That's the least you can do to help smooth the transition for current customers. If you choose not to and a customer has a problem with your new or enforced charges that were never levied before then you should just waive them, apologize for the confusion and consider them informed moving forward. Charging them anyway and then being rude about it isn't how you do business. That's how you lose customers.
Over the years I have had some pretty mixed experiences at Jensen's, starting around 2001.
I would like to contribute that with all the retailers who are jacking up prices and backing down from the weapons they sell, Jensen's has not budged an inch. I went in to "buy" (read: submit my background check) my new pistol on Saturday. I had read about the new owner, and heard second hand about some encouragement he had given the sales staff to emphasize customer service.
I can say that I worked Toys R Us for a whole Christmas month once, and it was nothing compared to Jensen's on Saturday. Customers were shoulder to shoulder between all four walls. Every sales person was exceptionally nice and polite. John (the employee, not the owner) sold me a new pistol and even took the time to make sure I got the LE pricing and help a newer employee while he was at it. The people doing background checks looked like the living dead, but they were cheerful and friendly, even when I checked my race but forgot my ethnicity :)
Their prices were the same as always - low. My Kimber was much cheaper than any other dealer I had found for miles, by almost $150 (before the LE price).
Don't get me wrong - I am not a shill for them. In the past, I have steered people away from Jensen's because the customer experience simply wasn't what you would expect from any store, let alone one where you are spending thousands of dollars. I am writing this post because I had heard they were quite different, and in my two visits (picked it up on Monday) I had a stellar experience, absolutely worthy of your patronage, especially in these times.
so.... Let me see if I follow this... You wanted them to bring in 3 lower receivers... which are a stocking item for them. You wanted them to let you bring in your own receivers, which, I am assuming were cheaper than the ones Jensen's had and you wanted them to do it for free. What a great deal. Screw them on a sale AND get them to work for you for free. Now, Bob may have done these for you in the past, but the new owner doesn't know you or your buying pattern. I know, for a fact, that Jensen's has ALWAYS had a $25 fee per gun and that is pretty standard around these parts. Bison Arms in Longmont charges the same fee as well as others.
Perhaps if you had gone up to the counter and said.. "The name is Muldoon" they may have done a wink wink nudge nudge and given you the transfers for free. But, perhaps... just perhaps, the new owner doesn't know that you are privileged and should be treated any different than anyone else.
I have transferred several guns through Jensen's, have also bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff, and I always got charged the $25. I guess I am not feeling very sorry for you.
If anyone gets "The name is Muldoon" bit, I will be surprised. It has to do with a bar... a new bartender and the Korean war...
Exactly! Then try to tell me to my face that their $75 fee to transfer three lowers on the same paperwork is a good deal if I shop around is adding insult to injury and assumes I'm a single cell organism w/o the common sense that god gave a door knob. And your thing with people not knowing me doesn't hold water because EVERYONE there knows me. It's a money grab and I'm alright with that. Business are there to make money. I get that. But there are right and wrong ways to go about things and the situation was just handled poorly, beginning to end.
For me, having spent thousands at Jensens over the last 6 years, the customer service continues to get better, and I enjoy myself while I am in the store now. The younger salesman is good at what he does, and I have yet to meet the bad guy you all speak of. I bought a pistol right before the election, and a rifle right after it, and both experiences were flawless.
If you want help in Jensens, you have to ask for it, they arent good at seeking you out.
