Here is a DIY thread for a fix'n Jeep thangs. ;)

Workin' on a '93 Xj, 4.0l.

Been doing some fix it work on the new (to me) XJ. Replacing air/oil/gas filters, dist/rotor, pugs/wires, sway bar bushings... You get the picture.

First problem was today. Went to replacing the front washer fluid pump. The old one was dead. Plugged the multi-meter into the plug switch. Push the "paddle" forward the wipers start and the meter shows 11.5 volts. Plug the new pump in and push the paddle, nothing happens. MM shows 0 volts and no wipers. Tried the rear pump and same thing. Even plugged in the "float level switch".

Any ideas?

Feel free to add other XJ problems here.

I hope this is a universal electrical problem, because the rear pump on my Amigo doesn't work and the rear wiper is intermittent.

It had voltage with the old one and now with the new one there is no voltage?
Check fuses and or relays,could have popped one when removing it -or it could be the switch-paddle is bad and not completing the circuit.
Check the voltage before the switch and after

Ive seen a few that had bad connectors at the wiper motor that was the culprit.

Muti-meter plugged into the plug, nothing else. MM reads 11.5 v. The plug/fuse has power. Plug it into a pump and there is nothing.

Ok now let me see if I understand-the plug that your taking readings on with your mm -is it the one that plugs into the pump?

If it is it sounds to me like it might not be making full contact to the pump-pins on connector spread or pushed in.
Do a quick check on the pump-hook up power directly to it should work, if it is a new pump.
If it does and your getting voltage at the plug,you need a new connector.

Yes. The same plug for the front pump.

The plug is a new two blade style. It is making good contact. The new pump works fine. I plugged it into the rear fluid pump plug and it works.

Going over it in my head...would the pump work if the +/- wires were switched on the new plug adapter?

Not going out to check that theory today. It's 10˚ and snowing. [Freeze]

If the new pump motor was hooked up with reverse polarity it would blow bubbles (there is a joke for that) into the reservoir, can you connect your meter in the back side of the connector with it hooked up to the new pump ? If you can, check the voltage while connected and pushing the switch.

I did check the voltage when the pump was plugged in. Voltage was 0 with the switch turned on.

As mentioned , check for loose or bad connections going back to the switch. And check the switch turned on under a no load and under load conditions.

Voltage at the plug at the pump, correct?
Check harness of pump for continuity, if you have it the pump is suspect

That's a pretty lame offer, at least you could offer to change the blinker fluid too.

I already filled the blinker fluid. Air filters are over rated. All the do is get dirty. Don't need 'em. [facepalm]

Looks like I will be chasing wire, when the weather gets better.

Ok, pulled up the wiring diagram and took a quick look, do the wipers do the 5 stroke wipe when you actuate the front washer switch (ignition on, of course) with the new pump motor installed ?

Nevermind, reread your first post, your problem is after the switch and at or after the common point where the washer switch actuates the wipers and feeds power to the washer pump.

And to BP, it doesn't take much to put your mind in the gutter, does it ?

Actuate the wipers and they will wipe and there is current at the pump plug but only when the the pump is not plugged in. Plug in the pump and nothing happens. No wiper. No current. Nothing.

Hopefully you are a slim small person, you will need to measure input and output voltage at the connector on the bottom of the steering column most likely the switch/ multifunction board under the steering wheel airbag. Be extra careful ! Shorting the wrong terminals in that connector could deploy the airbag.
Get a chiltons manual with wiring diagrams and disconnect the battery, wait 15 minutes, then disconnect the airbag circuit per the manual then reconnect the battery to troubleshoot electrical problems under the dashboard.

The umm "door protection" isn't welded closed, just to the door itself. The guy is retarded but apparently didn't go full retard.

The snow has melted in time for the water pump to take a dump. No warning, just a green fountain. [Roll1]

Replaced the WP, thermostat, serpentine belt and valve cover gasket. While replacing the valve cover gasket, I broke the temp sending unit on the back of the block. Picked up a new on from NAPA. Installed and started driving. The temp was 40˚ above normal! Rechecked everything. Still running hot. Took it to the local mechanic and hooked up a scanner to it. Temp gauge went to 250˚ and the scanner pegged at 210˚. Yep, the sensor is a POS.

Guess I'll be buying more parts from the dealer. I hate going to dealers.

Also replaced the oil filter adapter O rings, starter and battery this winter.

Up next:
Back up lamp switch.
Outer axle joints and maybe a front axle rebuild.
Motor mounts.
Auxiliary lighting.

Been a fun couple of days...NOT.

Got around to the front axle. Seals and bearings were good but the spindle joints were non existent. Some caps had no needle bearings left and non had any grease. Rusted into the shafts too. Good times.

The new joints have cured the 50mph death wobble.

Of course, the front brakes were toast. The driver side rivets were digging into the disks. Both sides had no pad of disk left.

Today was motor mounts and rear axle. The pic says it all for the MMs. Other than the lube, the rear axle looks pretty good.

Looks like the big stuff is done. Now those little annoying things are next.

1800 miles in a week. Averaged 17.0 mpg. Best mpg was 19.9! All-in-all it did a great job from Denver to Knoxville.
No problems but a leaking radiator. [Rant2] Need to replace it before the trip home. NAPA carries Spectra radiators. Any word on their quality? Working on a 4.0L/5 speed. I found a thread (different site) about radiators being better quality than others but can't find it back.

Bonus points for where I am.

Been a while since the last post.

The last two months:
Started overheating when under load.
Figured it was the head gasket.
Picked up a FelPro head gasket kit and some aftermarket Bosch injectors (thanks for the tip, Scully!).
Tore down the top of the engine and replaced gaskets and injectors.
Ran better but still overheated.
Injectors were a big improvement in power.
Replaced thermostat and a second water pump.
Better but not fixed.
Stopped by local muffler shop and found out most of catalytic converter was in the muffler. What was left was clogging the exhaust.
A cat. and muffler later, the overheating has gone away and the XJ runs much better.

All that and this is the only pic I have.
