As the title says. I'm wondering, though, if it was a vocal-posing ("This is the police open up") only, or if they tried to have uniforms too. Not enough details to know.

The exact reason I answer the door while armed or I just ignore it completely if I'm not expecting anyone.
I am sure many of you follow this rule but I do not answer the door if I am not expecting someone or I do not recognize them.
Reportedly in Canon City there have been scumbags knocking on apartment door, and knock the person out answering, then ransack the apartment after...
My dogs would be all over them- even wth that, when somebody shows up unannounced (rare out here) I'm always armed.
I ignore the door if I am not expecting anyone and try to remind the wife to do the same.
I am always armed at home.
I answer the door naked. The Jehovah's are always the best reaction...

The rule at my home is don't answer the first ring, if there is a second ring ask who it is and the answer "Me" is not good enough. Our neighbors have our phone number and know to call if they need anything and we do not answer the door after 9:00 PM. I can't think of any reason that someone needs to knock on my door after that time. If someone knocked and then identified themselves as LE, I still don't open the door (of course that has not happened to me in CO but did happen to me in CA, we conversed through the window until they told me what they wanted to talk about, turns out they were at the wrong house).
As to being armed at home, I figure if I am involved in a home invasion it will be at my home and I will not be invaded.
I don't open the door without checking the camera first. I am always armed at home, and my wife knows to leave the door shut unless she is expecting someone and has confirmed its them.
I don't understand the thought process behind not answering the door or the phone for someone you don't know or aren't expecting. I'm sure it stems from my job being trying to reach people all day long, but it seems to be counter productive.
I'm not talking about like in the middle of the night. People make it sound like any knock without their notice and they just don't answer.
I don't like people, and I don't have any friends. I don't want to buy any stupid crap anyone is selling or don't want to buy any religion they are selling (yes, soliciting religion is selling it) or don't want to give my time for a survey, or vote for their libtard person who is running for office, so I don't answer the door.
For what it's worth, I don't think I've ever had a stranger come to my door with anything that I needed to know, or where I was glad that I answered. However, people come over unannounced all the time.
I don't think you're being a dick, just looking at the issue from a different frame of reference. I don't want to take this thread any more off topic. Maybe one day I'll put it in the pet peeves thread if I ever get annoyed enough. It's perfectly fine if people don't want to answer the door, I just don't understand it.
And between the both of you, there it is.
Each to his/her own.
The day we take that away, that is the problem...
It's your house, your time so you can do what you like but let me ask you the inverse of your question: What good can come from answering an unsolicited doorbell?
If I'm expecting someone they can text/call and let me know they're coming and/or let me know when they're here. If I'm not expecting someone and they don't know my mobile number then I seriously doubt I've won millions of dollars and it's Ed McMahon delivering the check & balloons.
You get to meet your new neighbors and set a positive first encounter.
I have yet to see an impersonator with a legit looking police uniform from photos or video. If you are concerned that the people at the door are not the police, call dispatch and confirm that they have officers on a call at that location. If they don't, I imagine the police would want to contact these individuals. They may be connected to numerous other crimes if they are going that far.
Did anyone else hear, "it could be retaliation" at the beginning of the interview?
I've done some 'citizen academies' because they're a blast. I'm always baffled by the amount of time spent on this exact subject. Inevitably at some point the topic will come up (usually from some timid frail woman) and we'll waste hours talking about how you can tell and the basis is always invariably 'We don't use shitty cars, shitty uniforms or sketchy looking individuals' Now, I'm paraphrasing but it amazes me how many people are completely devoid of common sense anymore.
Ha! Not a lot of cops have the ghetto look to them. Now, I say that, but those of you familiar with DC Metro may also be laughing. I met numerous officers there that concerned me a little.
But usually smaller/metro area PD's are professional looking and it is very easy to tell the difference. And their dispatch will usually answer right away and have solid knowledge on the location of their officers.
I have had numerous citizens tell me in the middle of the night that the reason they took so long was because once they verified it was me they put their gun away. I tell them that I appreciate that they are aware of their surroundings and appreciate putting the gun away before opening the door.
I'll generally answer the door, but only after I verify who/how many people are out there(no cover for someone to hide and blitz me). I'll step outside with my weapon on my hip, and close the door behind me. Sometimes it's the neighbors asking if they can park in front of the driveway for a few minutes, sometimes it's people hocking candy/magazines/newspapers/religion, only twice has someone set my Spidey Sense™ tingling, and I tersely asked them to vacate the premises, and verified that they did so without loitering.
Too bad my door bell is broken ...
Just fire a couple of rounds through the door! [/Uncka Joe]
Everyone has their own spin. Everyone has their own circumstances, environment, and life experiences.
One thing that comes to mind is that letting someone at the door know someone is home, could prevent an attempted break-in. Then again, it could invite an attempted invasion. You never know.
My wife is bad about answering the door for just about anyone. I often answer but I'm always armed, 9/10 times I'm wearing an EDC.
I understand that some DO answer the door but what I don't understand is WHY they answer the door. I honestly want to know from those who DO answer their door an example of what good could come of it. In this day & age it just doesn't make sense. Too many ways for someone I know to reach me quickly & easily to let me know they're here. It just seems like there's far too many bad things that could come of it and not one good thing I can think of to even bother.
Neighbor girl rang my doorbell to tell me my son had been seriously hurt on a trampoline. I've had people return my escaped dog. The UPS guy rings my bell when a signature is required. USPS when a package is too large to fit in box. Broken sprinkler head watering the street. Kids asking if my kids can come out and play. I rang a bell at a house that was burning (empty thank heavens). To buy Girl Scout cookies. To find Jesus (if you misplaced him).
I certainly get that bad things can happen at your doorstep and precautions are warranted. But I'm fairly active in my neighborhood and am not ready to shut down just yet.
I'm rarely home to answer my door. I'm not interested in knowing my neighbors. But I know all their schedules, cars, faces, and friends and friends cars. If I don't know them, I ask wtf they want. Maybe I'm armed.......
It's a no-win situation for the pessimist. Answer the door and possibly get harassed or assaulted at worst. Don't answer the door and you're indicating to the potential bad guy that no one is home.
Do you think this guy knocked before entering?

I'm not a pessimist. I'm a realist who realizes nothing good comes from answering unannounced door bell rings and I've got better shit to do with my time than listen to someone yammer on about some bullshit that will either cost me time, money or (most likely) both. I know what my neighbors look like and most of the ones I like have my mobile number and aren't afraid to use it if they need something. I'm pretty familiar with what a UPS/FedEX/DHL/USPS truck look like as well. Are people that hard up for human interaction that they drop whatever it is that they're doing to open their front door for a total stranger to see what kind of magical mystery he bestows upon them?
If we don't know / recognize you , you're trespassing. The usual suspects, they know how to access the area, AND everyone of them calls or text, prior to setting foot on the property. You're an unknown trespasser, the local LE is called after asking you 1x to remove yourself from the area. At that time the spouse is dialing ay neighbor we have ph number for, to alert them also.
I think there are many good reasons to answer a door that have nothing to do with being starved for social interaction. While I do take precautions, I'm not ready to sleep in a panic room, hire people to get my mail and groceries, and start collecting my pee like Howard Hughes.
I ignore plenty of doorbells from obvious sales or religious callers. But I answer also. And more than once it has been an emergency contact that I was extremely grateful for.
