New Shooting Park Stirs Emotions

A shooting park that has been the center of much debate in northwest Las Vegas is one step closer to opening up for business.

On Tuesday, Nevada's top Republicans and Democrats were in the valley to dedicate the Clark County Shooting Park which is located near Decatur and Grand Teton.

It took years and help from politicians like U.S. Senator Harry Reid, Congreewoman Shelley Berkley and Senator John Ensign for the controversial shooting park to become a reality.

"This is going to provide tourism activities -- not only gun safety and education -- but also the tourist attraction that I think this could become for Southern Nevada is tremendous," Ensign said.

A 148-acre first phase is expected to open by December with trap, skeet, archery, pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges, plus a pro shop, classrooms and cafeteria.

Top leaders say there's finally a place where old time Nevada tradition can carry on. But while the sound of gunfire might be music to some ears, it's like nails on a chalkboard for nearby residents Michael and Michelle Twomey who can see the shooting park from their backyard.

"If I knew when I bought this house that that would be going there, there is no way I would have spent all of the money on this house," Michael Twomey said.

The couple has invested a lot of money in their backyard and now they are worried their personal paradise is about to be ruined.

"I know what it sounds like on the Fourth of July and that's what I'm envisioning and I think that is what is going to be heard, just constant shooting," said Michelle Twomey.

But Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins had no empathy. "They can call Uhaul and pack their ass and leave," he said. Commissioner Collins says the park is more than a half-mile away. He said residents who complain need to get a life.

"Pack your shit and go home. That's my feelings," he said.

"Build one in his backyard and see how he feels," said Michelle Twomey. They say even if they wanted to leave they couldn't. They say trying to sell their home complete with a shooting park in their backyard will be impossible.

Yeah, blame the fact he can't sell his house on the shooting range 1/2 a mile away when he probably paid 3x what the house was worth during an artificial real estate bubble. If had any intent on living in LV, I'd offer him 30 cents on the dollar and consider the proximity of the range to be a bonus.

I pray every day that the state will open a fancy shooting range within walking distance of my home ... so no Ms. Twomey, most red blooded American's would have no problem with one in their back yard.


Rather own a house close to a shooting range than on a damn golf course (a golf course is a waste of a perfectly good rifle range)

I'de personally put up with the noise, if the location was still ideal otherwise. Im curiouse how the rest of the land around this area looks.

Does anyone really care what the residents think about noise when they put in airports or freeways?

I seriously doubt most people would want to live next to an outdoor shooting range.

As to the other part, you're not supposed to run on golf courses (before and after hours it doesn't matter) but I'd sure as hell take my chances running on a golf course over a shooting range. haha

I wonder if the plan for the shooting range had already been approved when they bought or built their house. If so, they have nothing to bitch about, as a little research would have revealed the plan. If they were already living there during the approval process (a lot like a car or bike racetrack, I assume), then they have nothing to complain about in that case anyway, as they would have had time to participate in the process and voice their concerns. Bottom line, this wasn't a secret, and didn't just happen over night. I happen to live near the police range in Aurora, and yeah, sometimes it's a little strange, especially right around their cutoff time (10pm), when everyone decides it's easier to dump their magazines downrange rather than unloading them.

Anyhow, in all honesty, any noise you tune out over time. When I lived in Brighton, I was a mere three blocks from 2 railroad crossings (and less than 1/2 mile form 2 more). There were at least 10 times a day when then the trains would blow their horns 4x for each crossing and after 2 months, I seriously never heard them unless I stopped and concentrated on them.

I could also constantly heard gunfire from the ACSD range and down here, I can hear gun fire from the Buckley qual range here. I just smile when I hear it, of course.. I'm not gay. ;)

Those people should pack up and move to south side Chicago.

I agrre with everything said here 100%, but a range was built about 1/2 from my parents property in MO (no zoning requirements/approval was required) an found that the shooting @ 0700 tended to wake me up on the weekends when I wanted to sleep in, but you really do start to tune it out after a bit.

In the case of this Vegas area range, it's true that it was either approved before the home owners bought the property and they could have chosen not to make the purchase or it was approved after they owned the property and they could have voiced their dissent. Either way, it was a failure on their part to take action and now they just want to bitch about it - tough!

I wish we had more ranges here in CO to shoot at and would love to have one just 1/2 mile from my home. Talk about conveinent!

They should make suppressors free and mandatory. I mean some get offended when your car, truck or motorcycle doesn't have a muffler on it. I think it sucks to have to shoot guns without them.

But this guy is cool with me. I can't believe he said all of that too. I personally wouldn't mind a shooting range close by my house. I hear all the sounds of nature (e.g. firetrucks at 3am, booming systems and gun shots going god know where) I wouldn't miss a beat living next to a gun range.

Good point, at least with a gun range, you would know where the shots are coming from.

If I had the choice I would choose golf course strictly based on what it does for home values and the fact that we sell houses every few years and are not in our 'final home' at this point. Now, if I didn't care squat about home value and they were putting in a gun range and there was strict opposition I would negotiate a lifetime free membership and VIP service in writing to help their cause as a voice in the community.

I would NOT want to live that close to a range. I like my quiet neighborhood, thank you.

These people probably DID complain about it, and voice their dissent. Just because you complain, doesn't mean you get your way. Everyone on here should be very aware of that.

I am in the same boat. The range at PPCC is about 1/4 mile away. I also am next to Ft Carson so I get lulled to sleep by night fire.

Depending on the angle and the distance from their house, it would be funny to take shots at people's targets on the range ;)

Althought I like golf and shooting, I prefer not living near the golf course. Few things.
- Tired of cars driving in a small community at a 15+mph of speed limit ( if +5 mph,,, guilty! :) )
- I dont like mosquitos!
- Theres no benefit of living in a golf community that I cannot afford to be a private member of it.


However, i do miss a shooting range at HWY 7 near Erie that got replaced by golf course. :(

I think you guys are confusing having a back yard that opens up to a golf course to living near a golf course. Could you imagine having your back yard open up to a rifle range? lol

No, I don't think we're confusing it at all. You DO tend to tune out things you hear repetitively. Beyond that, safety regulations probably require a buffer zone so they don't actually open up to the range in their backyard.

As I alluded to in my previous post, the tone I'm getting from the article is that they did NOT complain and voice their dissent in the range approval process. Las Vegas was one of three areas in the country most affected by real estate overevaluation and the resulting collapse. I find it far more likely they bought high and are caught in a situation where no one is buying anything in Las Vegas and are blaming the range instead of their own poor judgment.

I've lived on AF bases off and on for the last 20 years. Nothing is louder than an afterburner take off of an SR-71, nothing. I slept right through them. Before that station, I was at a F-16 base that had over 70 F-16's. Day and night afterburner take offs almost every day of the year.

I don't even hear them anymore, and before it's said, yes I passed my retirement hearing test.

I would LOVE to live that close to a nice range. That's just way too cool. I could put the saved gas money into ammo. I suspect the bitching party might just be democrats, er I mean non-gun embracing citizens. F'em.

Ok, I know this thread has been dead awhile, but I just couldn't resist. I remember when I was a kid in the early 80's, my dad was president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the Issac Walton League. I remember when they were building their old range off of hwy 24. It was a great range. Mostly for shotgun shooters, but there were also rifle and pistol ranges as well. I learned how to shoot there. Well, long story short, people started bitching about noise and dust, and before too long, they had to shut the whole range down. That sucked.

I guess one of my prime reasons for moving out to the country where I am now is that I can have my own, private shooting range. I talked to my neighbors about what I was doing and was thrilled to discover that EVERYBODY out here is a shooter. I mean EVERYBODY!!!! I'm still respectful about not shooting to early or late etc., but it is such a pleasure not to have to worry about any BS.
