Any time I fill out anything that asks about my income I just pick the lowest choice available. If there aren?t choices and they want a number I usually just use $10K.
I don't like it either, but the census is specifically to identify the number of residents, not the number of citizens.

As pointed out above, natives and slaves were not citizens. This didn't mean that immigration, which was supposed to be controlled by the Federal government, would be an utter and complete failure.
In a past census, my great grandfather was included by the head of the household as a "Servant". In the census description it said "Works on the farm".
If they were able to identify Civil War veterans as part of a census, why the hell can't they ask if you're a citizen. If you're here illegally and are afraid to answer, you shouldn't be here. No government funds should be available as a result. This would certainly put an end to 'sanctuary cities' or states.
It doesn't really matter what was done in the past.
I'm not saying that I agree or disagree, just pointing out that just because something happened in the past, doesn't make it the end all/be all determiner of how things are done now.
I would agree that the Federal government doesn't need to put money toward illegals in a general sense, but as with everything in life, it's usually not a black and white issue.
My point is, why do we have to keep on creating more and more government "solutions" due to the same bastidges not doing their Constitutionally appointed duties?

In my opinion the census has become a marketing tool to ensure a captive population. The big things are race and income. These and other demographics are used by business interests to determine where to build profit making infrastructure and what can be charged for goods based on that set of demographics. Why do items in the Timnath Walmart cost more that the same item in the Fort collins Walmart. The same for gasoline, and other goods and services. The census is used to separate people from their money and therefore make it harder for people to get a step up. The census should only be used to make a count, not collect every detail of every person.
Do you imagine that without the census data that businesses would not be able to ascertain local market statistics? It sounds like you're describing traits of free markets as evidence of disappearing free markets.
What I mean is that if business knows every detail about the financial condition of a particular area, they will adjust pricing to take advantage of the income in that area. Maybe free market but I see it as a way for corporations to bleed the populace by adjusting pricing to take as much money out of a persons pocket as possible. Higher prices for consumer goods create a lack of available or discretionary cash in any given area and this limits travel and creates a captive population.
I shop at a certain place, or two, generally that are not where I live. However, in my choice of habitation for low rent, the stores in my area cater to a more affluent population base and pricing is higher for many goods. I try to do my shopping all at once and I will travel to get lower prices but most people will not for convenience sake. So I guess that in the end, people will make their own choices and therefore we have a free market. But it is a market that is being manipulated through the information collected in the census.
It is not collected for the good of the people. How do I know that? Because the politicians say it is for our own good.
