Just saw this and got really excited. The book will always be better than the film, but this looks rather promising.

Jason Mamoa is in it, which means I'll be seeing it.
Read the book somewhat recently, but am having a hard time remembering important plot lines.
Looking forward to it. Frank Herbert wrote good stories for being a lefty.
Well, I know the "real" Herbert fans absolutely HATED it, but I've always been a fan of the 1984 David Lynch/Dino di Laurentiis version.
The story was a complete mess, but VISUALLY the movie was stunning. The costumes, the sets and the overall "feel" of it was just incredible for its day. Overacted and hammy? Absolutely but that's exactly what that kind of story should be.
I particularly liked the depiction of the planet Giedi Prime, home of House Harkonnen. The dark, sinister "steampunk" look of it (long before steampunk was even a thing) was just mind blowing.
I read the book AFTER I saw the movie and honestly, didn't like it all that much. It was way too complicated to keep track of all the different threads running through it.
I read the book well before I saw the first movie, then read it again after. It would be impossible to tell the story in one movie, maybe in four to five movies. The movie gave me “faces” to see when I read it again. The book is best enjoyed when you can have at least a couple of hours to dedicate to it, especially when you first start. It is a science fiction classic, a great read.
I am sure the new attempt will be good and who knows, it may do Herbert honor. I am looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.
Ugh. Watched the original movie on the front row of the theater. My neck hurts just thinking about it.
I loved the book and the 1984 movie. I am also a fan of villeneuve's work. Lets hope the soundtrack is half as good as Brian Eno's one
8 posts in and no one has said it yet?!
?The spice must flow!?
Isn't spice just worm crap?
I did not hear anyone say Mighty Mouse.
I'm a nerd. I'll see it. Came across the books in the ship's library in the early 90s. Interesting to read while hanging out in the Persian Gulf. Watched the David Lynch movie on Laser Disk. Saw the SciFi miniseries as well. And I'd watch this version too, even if it looked like it was going to suck. About the only thing I.just couldn't get into were the follow up novels his son wrote. Lacked Daddy's talent and vision.
I know a lot of purists hated the David Lynch rendition but I felt it captured the spirit of the book. I am rather ticked that Villeneuve decided to gender swap a main character. I thought "Blade Runner 2049" was a bit of a mess but that's the only film of his that I've bothered watching. I think I'll watch this but may wait for it to be free on an airplane or HBO. I can't stand what Hollywood has been doing to classics.
The contemporary novels have lacked the breadth of the originals but I think Brian Herbert was providing details for a more in-depth look at the Dune universe from his father's notes while his co-author did the actual writing.
Much like I, Robot...
An impossible task to make into a movie... maybe 3-6 movies, but the whole story is so complex and layered.
I read the book in jr. high before the movie.
Never saw the series. I went to the movie with very low expectations and wasn't disappointed.
It was a decent attempt at the impossible- I don't blame anybody but Hollywood in general.
Double edged sword- if you didn't read the book first, it was fragmented and possibly confusing. If you did, they missed so many layers and complexity that you felt they didn't tell the whole story.
If they tried to make it into a series of movies, it would have dragged on.
How about somebody try to make "The Mote in God's Eye" into a movie? It would bore the general public with the attention to realism. (Another Larry Niven book, IIRC)
I read the Mote books. I've heard of Ring World, but haven't read it. Is Ring World better?
If you're going to read the Ringworld books, read Niven's "Protector" first.
O2
A lot of people who are typically cynical about Hollywood are being cautiously optimistic about this one.
After Hollywood managed to tank Star Wars, Star Trek, and a bunch of other beloved franchises, a new big scifi movie that doesn't suck would be a fairly welcome thing.
Regarding the David Lynch version, the 3 hour director's cut isn't a perfect movie, but it does fix a lot of the problems that were in the theatrical release.
Seconds to Ringworld.
I wonder how true the recent rumor is about Disney. How the execs finally got pissed off that all the SJW crap is costing them lots of money and they're hemorrhaging fans, and are basically "reminding" them all that all that shit has to stop, that they're an entertainment company and that's what is important.
Anyone else ever catch the Jodorowsky's Dune movie documentary?
Ringworld was a good set of stories but I think “Mote’’ was better. Pournelle was (IMO) the half of the team that made the plot move along. Niven can be a bit slow — and this is coming from someone who not only finished “The Silmarillion” but rereads it periodically. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy his stories but the partnership with Pournelle definitely improved him.
For some reason, a prior response didn't seem to get uploaded. Good retrospective on David Lynch's Dune (as well as the Jodorowsky proposal) on Midnight's Edge:

The SyFy channel's rendition was more accurate to the word of the books but missed the spirit IMO. I was looking forward to it and ended up very disappointed. Yes, Lynch converted the Weirding Way to Weirding Modules (the ME video actually explains why) but IMO it captured the spirit of the book much better, despite the butchering job the producers did to meet distributor demands.
I didn't like "Blade Runner 2049" so can't say I'm a fan of Villeneuve's work. I'll give him a chance but may wait for it to appear on HBO instead of going to theaters if it appears he engaged in more wokeness (like changing genders just because he can).
