I've often thought Ringworld would make an awesome movie but I don't know that any movie could really do it justice. And I don't know that a movie could be made that captures the book with any kind of reasonable budget.

A lot of people who are typically cynical about Hollywood are being cautiously optimistic about this one.

After Hollywood managed to tank Star Wars, Star Trek, and a bunch of other beloved franchises, a new big scifi movie that doesn't suck would be a fairly welcome thing.

Regarding the David Lynch version, the 3 hour director's cut isn't a perfect movie, but it does fix a lot of the problems that were in the theatrical release.

For legal reasons, that's a joke.

I wonder how true the recent rumor is about Disney. How the execs finally got pissed off that all the SJW crap is costing them lots of money and they're hemorrhaging fans, and are basically "reminding" them all that all that shit has to stop, that they're an entertainment company and that's what is important.

Anyone else ever catch the Jodorowsky's Dune movie documentary?

Ringworld was a good set of stories but I think “Mote’’ was better. Pournelle was (IMO) the half of the team that made the plot move along. Niven can be a bit slow — and this is coming from someone who not only finished “The Silmarillion” but rereads it periodically. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy his stories but the partnership with Pournelle definitely improved him.

For some reason, a prior response didn't seem to get uploaded. Good retrospective on David Lynch's Dune (as well as the Jodorowsky proposal) on Midnight's Edge:

The SyFy channel's rendition was more accurate to the word of the books but missed the spirit IMO. I was looking forward to it and ended up very disappointed. Yes, Lynch converted the Weirding Way to Weirding Modules (the ME video actually explains why) but IMO it captured the spirit of the book much better, despite the butchering job the producers did to meet distributor demands.

I didn't like "Blade Runner 2049" so can't say I'm a fan of Villeneuve's work. I'll give him a chance but may wait for it to appear on HBO instead of going to theaters if it appears he engaged in more wokeness (like changing genders just because he can).
