3 New CO Guns Signed into Law

In the past seven years , Colorado instituted one new gun law. Lawmakers passed six times that amount in one legislative session, and on Saturday, Gov. Jared Polis signed three of the bills into law.
These bills were announced after?the mass shooting at King Soopers in Boulder?on March 22, when 10 people were killed.
But, said Boulder Rep. Judy Amabile at the bill signing event, ?It isn?t just about mass shootings.
?It?s about what we sadly call everyday gun violence,? said Amabile, a sponsor of one of the bills. ?Every day people are dying all across our state from homicides, from accidents, from mass shootings and mostly from suicide.?

This year Polis signed?two other bills,?setting regulations for safe storage of guns in homes and requirements for reporting lost or stolen firearms.?One other gun bill, meant to keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers, awaits the governor?s signature.
Here?s a brief look at the three that were signed Saturday. They are set to take effect immediately.

Expanded background checks (HB21-1298)

What it does:?You can no longer buy a gun without a completed background check (a person who sells one before it?s complete could face a Class 1 misdemeanor charge); the list of people who are not legally allowed to get guns for five years now includes following violent misdemeanors: third-degree assault, sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact, child abuse, violation of a protection order, a crime against an at-risk person, harassment, a bias-motivated crime, cruelty to animals, possession of an illegal weapon and unlawfully providing a firearm other than a handgun to a juvenile.

Local control of gun regulations (SB21-256)

What it does:?This reverses a ban that keeps local governments (towns, cities and counties) from creating their own gun regulations. But local jurisdictions can only make ordinances that are stricter, not more lenient, than state law. Any regulations currently in place that are less restrictive are effectively overturned. A person can only face a criminal penalty for violating local laws if they knew about them or reasonably should have known. The new law also puts concealed-carry requirements back in the hands of the state so they?re consistent, but it does allow local governments to decide where those guns can be carried.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention (HB21-1299)

What it does:?About $3 million will go to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for the first year to create the?state?s first Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which will be tasked with coordinating and promoting efforts to reduce gun violence, including providing training and public awareness campaigns. The office can also provide grants to community organizations working on the issue, especially those working with high-risk communities.

I will no longer be watching or paying attention to the local news. The only law that matters is the 2nd. This laws has made ignorance of local laws an acceptable excuse.

We are not required to be layers and pay attention to laws that arbitrarily change.

Texas House Bill 1500 prevents any government entity from prohibiting the sale or transportation of firearms or ammunition during a declared disaster or emergency.

Yes, those laws are good, but unless the penalty for a govt leader violating them is death or imprisonment, they really mean nothing. We have to start getting pound-you-in-the-ass prison sentences for govt people that violate our 2A laws— just like if we break the laws they pass.

Tx just got Constitutional carry. Az has had it for 11 years.

The only thing texas leads the way for is. bragging ;) There's also much less public land in Tx, compared to Az, to shoot on. If one was comparing stats. BUT Tx does have a higher wage, per area and different tax rate than Az.

Colin may be a little off on TX being the most pro-2A state. It ain't bad, but it ain't the best. I'd say AK, AZ, ID and OK are just as good, if not better, than TX.

Since the interpretation of these laws are unconstitutional they are null and void.

Go back to when you were a kid. If your parents wrote some rules, listed some chores, and said if you did x and y you would get this "reward"....

What happens to the parent when they don't abide by their own rules and/or they fail to do what they promised? The kid is disappointed, but has no pragmatic mechanism to enforce the contract, the only enforcement occurs when the kid breaks the rules. That is government in a nutshell. The kid can bitch and moan all they want, but in the end, the government, and the parent, is both the author and the enforcer of their contract and you have no choice but to remain in residence.

Couple this with SB 280-
Colorado?s laws around bias-motivated crimes ? also known as hate crimes ? would be expanded under this bill, which says that bias only needs to be part of a defendant?s motivation for the offense to be considered a hate crime. The bill would also make the crime of harassment, when motivated by bias, a Victim Rights Act crime, which provides a victim certain rights.

Someone claiming harassment can get your guns taken away, get you additional criminal penalties and go after you in civil court. With the hundreds of likely left leaning judges appointed by Hickenlooper and Polis, a favorable decision for a firearm owner is unlikely.

So intentionally driving the speed limit on a 2 lane road and smiling at the a hole behind you tailgating could be considered harassment and I loose my guns. This amuses me at the total vague stupidity in laws.

Well, on top of the 2 Lane Highway left lane driving law we have here that you would also be violating.

2 lane highway is 1 direction each way not 2 lanes in one direction. That would be a multilane highway.

Well, there was the original suit by Jon Caldera that was challenging the constitutionality of the Boulder ordinance and kept getting declined because higher courts kept saying it was a state issue.. well now it’s a constitutional issue again.

Any law that goes into place that seemingly restricts rights as viewed by progressives gets an immediate injunction before the ink is dry.
