Reading the comments: It's honestly amazing to me how much "life experience" plays into peoples idea's of what they read. Two people reading the same material can come up with complete opposite summaries of what they've read... The human mind is an amazing thing.
I still stand by passing the law. Illegal is illegal. Tap, rack, and Bang. Two in the head and you know they be dead.
Nothing in there that we didn't already know about. Two points.
1) LOL about finding two whole Koran Bibles when they claim that 1,200 people a day pass through.
2) The difference in quality of immigrants that get over here from over seas through legal channels is very significant. It is very clear that a very large border wall is a great solution to this problem.
It blows my mind how many of the comments to this article come from people who think this bill is racist. Seriously, how does making it harder for ILLEGALS to be here ILLEGALLY constitute racism? If Americans cross the borders to any number of other countries illegally there are strong and costly consequences. But not here, we have to be nice and friendly and ignore our laws and our border town people's safety, WTF!!??? [Rant1]
There are a lot of people who are using this bill as a cover to say racist things, and they are afraid that cops will use this law as an excuse to be racists as well. However, I have to agree, there is not a damn thing that is racist about this law.
that article helped clarify a few things for me.
I was concerned about a carte blanche stop and identify law.
She makes it a point that it must be during a legal stop (for other reasons).
So that means no extra burden on americans to prove their identity.
which makes me happy.
Just in case someone thinks that we don't need to show our Photo ID, just try using your credit card to buy an Ice Cream Cone like the fella in todays Gazette's political cartoon.

i am speculating, but wouldnt most countries whose borders were over run by 20 millionish, think it was an invasion? it is an invasion of US territorial soverignty.

I would think so. I didn't want to go too far with my tinfoil hat ideas, but it really does seem like an invasion. I have no problem with any person who wants to be an American citizen so as to have a better life. I don't blame them one bit. But we have a right and a responsibility to secure our borders.
It is about national security and sovereignty, not race.

Such a mess. The deserts outside of Tucson are nuts. Just to be blunt though, the wall idea has a huge hitch that will be very very hard to overcome, the Tohono O'Odham reservation runs along the border, both north and south just southwest of Tucson, they don't want a wall as they want tribal members to be able to cross freely, and I don't envy the politician that wants to put federal troops on a reservation to build a wall (wounded knee?). I could tell many stories about run ins down there. I still say this bill is just politics, no teeth to it, especially with the revamping which prevents and racial basis for suspicion. Fake IDs are too easy, doubly so, as the only option to make it hard to get a fake would be to make all Arizonans carry their passport. Then there would be a rash of fake passports.
My opinion, laborers get "right to work" type cards that are valid for a little while and mean they have to pay income type taxes on earnings (probably higher than the US rate as something of a labor tarrif giving an edge to American workers), but can work in the US after a back-round check.
The border patrol and ICE are then freed up to take down drug runners and criminals, either not paying taxes or hiring those that don't, leaving cheap plentiful labor to help businesses and farms in need, and freeing up USBP to chase down real criminals instead of trying to herd a sea of cats crossing the 3 strands of barbed wire (not kidding, that is the border fence for the most part) every day. If one gets caught in the US without said card, they are out, deported, and never able to get a card again. card holders are not civilians and cannot vote and neither are their children, where ever they are born.
I am sure this won't be popular with labor, but a believer in trickle-down economics would be obliged to love it, and I have a hunch most economists would be happy with it as well.
