Unless you speak spanish and pay only in cash, you'd do ok shopping there...
It is just everything Mexican. I opened this thread to respond, but realized that we went to a Sav-A-Lot. That place had buckets all over the produce section to catch the water dripping from the ceiling.
I think they're building a Rancho Liborio next to my place. I'll give you my impression in about 2 months.
We definately shop their sales.
I did all the electrical in the one off federal. Do not under any circumstances Ever buy from that place. The filth I had to endure to complete that job is undescribable.
Ya need to get out more. We nuts have been talking a little here. http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36065
And they do have great sales on meat.
funny that save a lot was mentioned in the same thread as Nasty filth...
not really, but anyway.
We recently took full advantage of the sale Rancho had on Chicken, good deal, Quality chicken.
Stoked up.
Ya'll do got some goofy establishmente in the city.
Saw a Yu Fuk resturant on Federal.
And could of swore there wqs a Loco Libido store down there too.
Don't wear your bandana.
THIS IS FUCKING AMERICA!
I do not support business that have their name in spanish, advertise in spanish or are easier to shop in if you speak spanish.[Rant1]
And yes, I do speak spanish, Italian and some German and French too.
But I choose not to, because in America we speak English.
i dont think I have been in a grocery store in at least 7 years. I have been in walmart maybe 1 time a quarter. but, just the non food side. so, i am of little help to you.
We buy lots of fruit and veggies there.
The lunch counter has some great roast Pork and beans.
They used to have marinated chicken packages that were ready for the grill.
They take Credit Cards. And you don't have to speak Spanish.
Its a nice change from the Asian Market or the German Deli!
Rancho Liborio has good prices, keep an eye on their sale papers that come in the mail. From time to time, they have some REALLY cheap things. I've gone a couple times and found their produce to be on it's way out though, so be careful. If it's the beginning of the sale, you should be ok. Toward the end, nah.
well i swooped in there after class today. the one on colfax and havana is very clean and neat, albeit a little small and tight. whats the deal with their grocery carts that are 18x too big? the produce was insanely cheap, you just have to look it over well. i felt the peppers for firmness and same with tomatoes. onions are hard to go wrong on. fruit is somewhat hit and miss. i grabbed some kiwis, but again you really need to feel them because some are much too mushy. strawberries were on sale for $1.49/lb! so i looked those over and grabbed some. thats about half the cost at most places. they look fine. i appreciate that the store labels what is from the usa and what isn't, etc.
the meat was also pretty cheap. i got the chicken for 1.49/lb, but the only thing with it is it really needs to be trimmed up and cut up because the pieces are huge and have lots of unwanted extras on them. i probably cut off half a pound from a 5 lb group, which isn't a huge deal and still awesome savings. they had pork shoulder for 2.00/lb which isn't bad. probably the most impressive thing to me was the marinated meats at the counter. they were pretty dang cheap and looked good. i picked up some carne al pastor cut into pieces and marinated for like 2.50/lb which i thought was a pretty dang good deal. you can make a lot of pastor tacos for that. seafood was meh. i was looking to get some cheap salmon, which they have, but it doesn't look the best. im particular when it comes to fish since im not a huge fish person anyway. packaged goods are pretty expensive. i would never buy milk, cereals, etc from there because its just too expensive. but i live next to a target that has those things really cheap so its a win win. i ended up getting several bell peppers, a few kiwis, two lbs of strawberries, cilantro, whole wheat tortillas, 5lb chicken, 1.5lb pork shoulder, 1lb pastor, red onion, and yellow onion all for $20. id say thats a successful outing.
for the whole week all i need now is a box of cereal, some milk, cheese, apples, blueberries and yogurt, so im guessing the entire week of groceries for me and my wife will cost about $50. pretty good deal. even got to work on my spanish some. ill be back next week
KS has whole chickens for .98 pr#.
For day to day shopping I've found that Sunflower market has much better prices on produce than any of the chain stores. Doesn't last as long, but no preservatives or other crap either. I personally wouldn't go out of my way to shop at one of the ethnic places. If I'm in the area though, have no problem shopping there.
I've seen the ads for Sunflower Market. Last summer they were selling bell peppers for $.50 a pop and Walmart was like $2.00/ea. The ones at Sunflower were easily twice as big as the ones at Walmart too.
Do they have signs in an oriental language only?
Do they speak no english?
If that is the case Hell yeah I have a problem with it!
If you care so much about your "original culture" stay in your original country.
I am not an Italian-American.
I am American.
I do not expect anybody to speak Italian to talk or do business with me.
I expect the same courtesy when I deal with other immigrants.
It is about RESPECT!
You can go to any grocery store and people there will understand English. It is the same with any taco stand (mostly).
except if you went to germany or france or china and there was an american pub, or american gorcery store, where you got to hang out with americans and speak english and make your life easier. then you would probably be a-ok with it. its not that complicated. there is a market for people that are foreign to open up restuarants, grocery stores, etc for other people of their nationality. especially at a store such as this where they sell items you can't find other places. im all for assimilation too and think people should have to learn english before entering our school systems, but frankly as long as people are assimilating to some degree i have no problem with them having their businesses that focus on people of their nationality. if i was in a foreign country i would love nothing more than to have american businesses that i can go to if needed. doesn't mean itll be the only place i go, just means i can find stuff there i can't elsewhere and don't have to worry about the language barrier.
rancho liborio has everything in spanish and english and the majority of the workers spoke english. i wasn't even close to the only non-hispanic in there.
It is not about them understanding English.
I cannot believe I have to spell it out:
People that live here and have built this country with all the opportunity it offers should not have to learn a foreign language to shop in a business.
The ex-Checker Auto Parts on 38th and Federal used to have their sale signs in spanish only.
If you did not speak spanish you did not get to take advantage of the sales.
Am I the only one to think this is wrong?
Feel free to put up your signs in English with a spanish translation if you want to tap in that market, but English should be the main language.
I dare you to find anybody of Italian descent that speaks Italian.
This is because their immigrant parents and grandparents would not teach Italian to their kids, but rather have them assimilate entirely with their new home.
The Safeway next to my house closed. They are reopening it as a Mexican grocery store. I'm not very happy about it, but I'd rather have A grocery store, than NO grocery store.
After the war of 1846-1848 the treaty between Mexico and the United States did not specify any language or religion that the inhabitants had to adapt to in the newly conquered area of Mexico that was added to the United States.
Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, California, Arizona.
The weird grocery store is based in Southern California. They have the same rights as I do!.
ummm ok, seeing as how this has nothing to do with what we were talking about. no one said it was spanish only. besides, they should be able to have whatever language they want, they just lose my business if they don't speak english. you must live in a bubble, in chicago there are areas all over the city that have only a specific language. same with LA. same with new york. i couldn't care less, they just don't get my, and many other americans' business. thats their perrogative. when you start making ultimatums on what business owners can do culturally, you start down a slippery slope.
again, i am all for assimilation. i don't think having communities that basically segregate themselves from american society is a good thing. but its america, and its their freedom to do so. after all, thats what makes america great. the freedom to practice whatever religion or culture you seem fit
Silly me for bothering to learn English before coming here.[Bang]
