Yeah practicing my calls.
sounds like fun...would love to go sometime
I'm trying the Hunter's Specialties Squealing Hen this year. It was under $20 at Wal Mart.
Thinking of using the protiturkey decoy, she has on fishnets and a general trashy look, brings em in guranteed so they say.
Season doesnt open for another week for me. I'm hunting on our farm in Kansas. Just counted 5 Toms in the yard before I headed for home today, and told them I'd see 'em next week... I'll post pics of the big river birds next weekend.
I've always wanted to but never have gotten down to it.
Well where are the gobblers?
Saw alot of hens not one male.
Its pretty quiet on this side of the hills. Except for the damn wind!! I'll keep calling though. Maybe I'll get lucky.
I ruined my buddies SUV on a deer this morning on my way out. Does that count for anything? Stupid deer, stupid early a.m. fishing/hunting trip.
Get the meat? Or did it run away?
Permits? first come first dibbs. Never had a problem in Jeffco or Park.
I was too pissed, no roadkill for me. It was a headshot too. Small buck took out the front left fender and drivers door. Stupid deer ran into me after I thought I missed it. I'm not sure the DOW would have believed me if I got checked fishing anyways. Cooler full of backstrap and a .22 rifle in the backseat that I was taking to Sully3acr in LakeGeorge. Not a good combo.
Sherriffs have no fuk'n idea about game or how to kill a hit deer/elk, etc so what's the worry.
DOW looking for fish in a cooler. DOW finds back straps in cooler and rifle in back seat = jail time. Sherrif's a non issue, just DOW. We didnt call the popo, my buddy only has liability and didnt need a popo report.
I have a buddy thats a Jeffco Sherriff and the stink of the deal is if the Sherriff has to discharge his firearm to put the animal down there is a Sh-t load of paper work for them to fill out. Thats why I'm askin if I can slit it's neck and the officer will be Ok with that?? I'm down with that and my Fat Belly will be filled!![Beer]
Hiked and called for 8 hours today. Went from 7,400ft to 9,200ft! Nothing!! Didn't hear or see anything. The day ended with a huge snowstorm. Going back in the morning.
Goodluck guys!
Hopefully meek week on my days off. Heading to laporte.
Hiked for another 6 hrs. today "NOTHING"! Oh well, keep trying!
Almost took a shot today! Turkey was a good 50 yrds. in thick brush so I passed on the shot. Going back this evening! How is everybody else doing?
I saw more HENS...
I finally got my Tom this evening around 5:30 pm! It had a 9" beard! My shot was from
45 YDS! That new H&S squealling hen call really made the difference! The Tom really came in running before I terminated him! I'll try to get a pic up in the morning.
It's quiet down here on the east foothills. I've put in about 20+ hours, 7100-8400 feet, and heard NADA! Ran into another hunter, same story. Found some huge tracks in some old mud. I wonder if the hard winter hurt the population or delayed mating? I'll save my energy and go back out in a few weeks. I can't remember the last time I hunted a whole morning and didn't even get a gobble. Anyway, congrats Montrose, well deserved with your determination.
Thanks Reticon! I did put some hours in the field this past 3 days. I was due for a Turkey! It's been 4 years! I don't want to sound like I'm pitchin this H&S squealer, but it really works. It's great for the areas where the Turkeys are a little educated to all the callers. $15 bucks at Wally World!
I saw my flock just as I got on to pavement right off the damn road this morning. I stuck my head out the window chirped a couple of times and oh ya, The Jakes were a gobble'in little bastards. I'll try call again tonight when I get home!
Congrats MONTROSE1911 on your Tom!! [Beer]
I've seen them off of Wadsworth blvd. just across the highway from Chatfield reservoir. So I would assume Roxborough State Park and the surrounding area has them.
Thanks. It's cool to see what locals are saying about the game. I'm hunting between Beulah and Rye. I figure I'll get back out there next weekend if the wind finally dies down. I'm also glad to hear that folks are hearing gobbles, or like you bagging a big tom. I was starting to think the harsh winter had killed them off or something.
If I text a pic too somebody, can they post it for me? I can't get my computer to load pic's!
I got mine around noon today. First day out after old Tom. Took him @ 10 yards with the old 2 3/4 low brass #7.5 birdshot out of my piece of shit Remington O/U. One of my employee's with me got his as well. Never saw us in our plane jane work clothes. Notice the R.A.R. Guns long sleeve in the pic. 10" beard, 1 inch spures. Ugly as hell.
