My MacBook's lasted me 4 years without any issues (that weren't a direct result of my stupidity).
Just saying [Coffee]
put linux fedora on a laptop that my wife was using. used to have vista on it. vista is a pos. started taking 20 min to boot up. cost me 400$ to make her happy again. the wife. not the laptop. the laptop was made happy with fedora again.... :)
MS just released info on their new "Windows 8" (probably not going to be called that, but that's the "internal name" for now).
They are trying to make something that is very tablet PC friendly and looks like the same type of OS you find on many smart phones ~ using tiles and touch screen, etc.).
As an old time computer geek, I prefer an OS with command line interface versus click on the pretty pictures icon cr@p. But, for full compatibility with most of the rest of the world I also realize that certain things will never change for the better and MS will keep producing junk that they want us to embrace.
Even after all of these years of having MS Windows, most folks still struggle with many of the basics. I shouldn't complain too loudly - it is keeping me employed and makes me look like some sort of genius hero to 100+ people on a daily basis.
for most windows > Linux Converts I introduce them using Ubuntu.
I find it makes the transition easier. Familiarity breeds comfort and confidence.
I tried Unbuntu for a couple weeks... couldn't find any reason to keep it. The OS X interface just felt better to me.
I've got the same opinion of Windows that the original poster does. Can't stand it! I gave some serious thought to going back to a Mac (went to a PC in the 1990s when I had ballistic software that I needed to run and it was not at all Mac friendly). My issue with a Mac is the company as a whole. It's my understanding that Al Gore is even on the board there. But then Bill Gates is a screeching lib as well.
Any computer that can only handle one mouse button just ain't good enough for me...
He is one of, if not the, worlds preeminent capitalist.
Just because he's giving away his billions of dollars to improve the world of his own volition. He isn't stealing the money from everyone else at gun point.
Aside from having run a company that strengthened and profited from it's monopoly, How are you going to bag on the guy?

Get a Mac, Run windows as a program in paralells like windows was ment to be.
Windows = good program
windows = bad os
I would also give a +1 to ubuntu.
BTW Steve Jobs sits on the disney board, you hate mickey too?
That one button does just enough, your two fingers will do the rest. I love the two finger swipe to scroll!!!!!
Said computer that is in for repairs is a Mac. Which is why I hate using windows so much!!!!!!!!!! This Mac has lasted over two years with an issue that I didn't cause.
Please keep loving windows, and refuse to switch to Mac (wife). It keeps the viruses off my computer.[Flower]
I was behind one of these drivers the other day. Brake lights on the entire way. "What's this? A green traffic light? I'd better press that pedal and make the rear lights come on..."
Heh, I find the Mac vs PC argument kinda meh. Gun forums and porn look good on both... let's get back to Series 80 vs Swartz safeties, AR vs AK, and cake vs pie arguments like the good lord intended.
the Mac one button thing is more played out then the.45 versus 9mm debate............
Except the mac can use as many buttons as you want and the 9mm is still only 9mm...............
I think you should also look at Linux Mint ... its even more newbie friendly than regular ole Ubuntu (its based on Ubuntu).
I've got a couple of our sales reps running it and they're not even remotely computer literate yet they are able to function quite well.
Macs have been shipping with two button mice for the last few years ... and they've ALWAYS been able to use multi button mice.
Just remember, Mac OS X is Unix. That alone makes it superior to the Registry from Hell (Windows).
Download and install PCLinuxOS for FREE.

Ok, so here's my thoughts on OSs (as a long time geek and computer user).
I've been using MacOS since System 7 and Windows since Windows 1.0. Prior to the release of Mac OSX and after the release of Window 95 I came to the conclusion that Windows was the superior system, but OSX (being based on a modified BSD Unix kernel) blew Windows out of the water (that said, Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft has made since MSDOS 5.5) The main problem I have with Windows is the Registry (but I'm not going to bore y'all with a lecture on insecure operating systems).
That said, I actually trust Apple less corporately than I do Microsoft (not that either is trust worthy) and with the advent of iOS (the OS in iPhones and iPads) my distrust of Apple is at an all time high. I fully expect MacOS 11 to be a variation on iOS and not OSX (so its going to be a VERY closed system ... with software ONLY available through THEIR app store). So that's why I hesitate to recommend Macs to Windows users (that and Win7 doesn't suck as much as earlier windows).
Anyway, I've also been a Linux user off and on for the last decade as well (told you I was a geek) and I would say that FINALLY there are Linux distros that are usable by non computer geek folk, but under some very specific conditions;
(if you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, stick with Windows or OSX).If you answered no to all those than maybe you should consider giving Linux a try (I recommend Linux Mint, Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS .... in that order ... and after typing all that I'm too lazy to make those into hyperlinks so go Google them yourself [Tooth] ).
- Do you use a piece of software that you just can't live without (and there is no open source alternative)?
- Do you do a lot of gaming (look here before you answer for sure)?
- Do you wish to use or continue using the iTunes store?
- Are you a complete idiot?
This is good advice.
http://ubuntu.com has step by step to burn a "live CD". Once you burn it, you can put it in the tray of a computer and start it up, and Ubuntu will launch from the CD without touching the hard drive. It lets you try before you buy, although it's very slow. Can also run it from a 2gb memory stick. Also very good way to make a 3 or 5 year old computer useful again.

Oddly, I have an emachines desktop running vista that's been going for 4 years now with almost no issues. [Beer]
Apparently the secret is getting both terrible hardware AND terrible software. That way they cancel each other out and it works perfectly.
Another +1 for Ubuntu. Now if only I could get either a working laptop or upgrade the vid card in my cappy Dell, I would be able to use my computer more. Oh, and a consistent internet connection, guess I'll have to pay for it some day.
