The House Judiciary Committee approved legislation on Thursday that would require Internet service providers (ISPs) to collect and retain records about Internet users' activity.

CNET reported the bill would require ISPs to retain customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses for 12 months.

The bill passed by a vote of 19 to 10, and is aimed at helping law enforcement track down pedophiles.

“The bill is mislabeled,” Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), a senior member of the panel told CNET. “This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It’s creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes.”

Whatever, congress clearly has the authority to do this "under several clauses, the good and welfare clause and a couple others. All the scholars, the constitutional scholars that I know -- I’m chairman of the Judiciary committee, as you know -- they all say that there’s nothing unconstitutional in this bill..."

Also, the Fourth Amendment clearly doesn't apply to the internet. There's no way the Founders could have known about the internet. That's why they left the Constitution open to interpretation. Besides, they were just a bunch of white slave owners. AND... it's to protect us, because mommy, errr, i mean congress knows best. Duh.

Pretty sure that anyone who I am doing business with is already keeping normal business records. The phone company, the power company, the cable company and a number of other places keep all kinds of records about you. For most people their IP address does not change in 12 months, but most ISPs already keep records to deal with abuse.

So... I operate under the assumption that all this is being done already.

Proxy servers may get pretty popular...........

The NSA and OIA already have that data, this just permits local law enforcement agencies to prosecute people with it. If you think anything you do online, even behind several proxies, cannot be traced back to you you are mistaken. Who do you think is behind some of those proxies? Did you think it was just a free service some foreigner was providing because he believes in freedom?

You know all that personal information that you give them (Kings, Safeway, etc.) when you get one of their member cards? Why do you think they need that just to give you discounts on crap?
They don't. Its for advertising. They track the things you purchase and send you coupons and such for similar items. Convenient, maybe, but the point is YES, they do have that information on you, and most of the time you willingly give it to them.

All my shopping cards track back to accounts with no name or phone number or to false ones. F them for trying to track me. As to the gov already doing something. Well impuning our Constitutional rights is not an excused because someone has already done it. But hey who needs the 4th Amendment........ or the 2nd for that matter.... right

I figured you'd mention discount cards. This is entirely different though. This is closer to car manufacturers tracking every single place that you drive your vehicle to and how you spend your money at each destination.

If you pay with anything but cash, in person, and not under a camera or recording device......then there is a record of what you did somewhere. I am convinced there is no anonymity anymore, and that if you feel the need for privacy in your actions then you MUST be hiding something (said with the greatest sacrasm). Like mentioned already...the records are there, it's just a matter of who is allowed to legally use that info and how. Advertisers and sales/marketing groups already violate your privacy and security more then many would like to realize - especially online.

This is different because they are charging the IP provider to keep records. You're not purchasing anything from the IP provider, so what business do they have keeping a record of it?

Don't get me wrong... I'm not agreeing or supporting this crap. All I'm saying is that most of it is already being done.

Sure it is, but only in each individual organization. King Soopers only know what you buy from King Soopers. Your ISP is going to know what you bought from EVERYWHERE.

So, don't get caught purchasing guns for fun and fertilizer for your yard in the same month from now on I guess.

This is pretty scary stuff. That backwoods cabin is starting to look better and better every day...

So the question is what other garbage did they try to push through while the public was distracted. For a long time now people have been trying to strip net neutrality. To create a system where certain websites can flow faster than others.

This stuff is happening already. Now the companies are just forced to keep the info. I don't like it either but it seems to just be the way it is.
