I think that would fall under make my day since your life is threatened by the knife...... Could be wrong
But essentially he isn't really threatening you yet. Your dogs life is at jeopardy.
Under Colorado's "Make My Day Law" once he's broken into your house and you have reason to believe he will commit any other crime (stabbing your dog would count as another crime) you can use lethal force.
18-1-704.5. Use of deadly physical force against an intruder.
"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 18-1-704, any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant. "
Shit anyone going after one of my dogs regardless the location is going to eat some lead.
Breaks into your house? Shoot da sumbitch before he gets a chance to hurt your dog, or anyone else!
I love living in CO!Quote:

now comes the discussion of having a shotgun or a handgun or rifle? what happens if your dog is on the burglar? do you risk hitting the dog with the shotgun?
what if he had your wife or child at knife point?
Sbr or 1911 (maybe a G19).
:)
Immediately go to this forum and ask the burglar to wait a sec and post a new thread "What should I do ?"[ROFL1]
Uninvited in my house, Two to the chest, one to the head. Going after the dog with a knife, Mag dump. Don't mess with my dog.
I'm not gonna be hard on the kid ... there was a time when all of us were newbies.
Yes we were. We also know how to use the search function, FAQ's surf the web and IF a CCW holder, KNOW the basic C.R.S. for Use of Deadly Force. It's one of the most important pieces of paper ALL instructors should be giving their students as well as discuss in or during class.
Can i quote it verbatim off the top of my head, no. Do i know it, yes.
Lethal force is authorized and I'll help fund your defense. Remember these words " I feared for my life and they gave me no other choice."
Someone is overthinking things.
I have 2 small boys and a wife in the house. She knows if im not there she shoots intruder until they are no longer a threat. As far as choice of weapon, first choice would be 12GA for shear stopping power. But if others are too close I go to a 1911.She has her 686 close by at all times when I am not home.
What if it is your girlfriend's dog and you never liked it anyway?
There's no difference between burglar and intruder in practical terms when talking about a dwelling.
Burglary is basically defined as entering unlawfully or remaining unlawfully with the intent to commit a crime therein (against persons or property). If the burglar/intruder is armed with a deadly weapon it's 1st Deg Burglary.
That only happens with my boys if I let you in the door. Otherwise it's bite first and play later.
Now see that's why you need a aggressive breed...
Like my Jack Corgi Mix Guido's (nickname). I have been tore up by a few dogs in the day but this little guy is pure nastyness when he gets ticked.

With dogs it is about training and instinct. I used to train Shutzhund (for the uninitiated that is the training that military and police dogs get) and a properly trained dog knoes when it should be in family mode, and then can flip a switch to protection mode when needed. Shepherds, Rotties, Dobermans generally do not need much training to encourage this instinct, if they are descendant from good working stock. They know if someone belongs or not and are excellent judges of character. I can recount many stories from my childhood, before I started training working dogs of Shepherd's we had that had no training that knew something was not right and protected the family with a single-minded purpose. Not to say that they are a catch all. A determined intruder can find a way around any obsticle you put in his way, bit generally if you have a pack of big naturally aggressive dogs they will go to easier pickings. BTW I had a buddy that in his youth was a criminal, did a lot of burglaries. He said the same thing about giving my dogs a steak. So, I challenged him to do it when I was not there. He said that he nearly was eaten by my boys.
My GSD is very protective of my family. She never lets my boys get more than few yards away from her at all times. Once they were in the back yard jumping on the trampoline and my Dad sneaked in from the side gate. He came around the corner and yelled trying to scare my boys. She ran up and bit him before she realized who he was.
