Just want to comment that situations like this help build how officers react to certain situations. "Why didn't the officer do this/that?" "Why couldn't the officer have just ...?"

Maybe it's because a few days, weeks, months, years before they tried to cut someone a break and almost got killed.

I agree. I treat them with respect and most will respect my right. Although once I got handcuffed by ICE enforcement for no reason - that was fun. Ok no really, I almost cried.

The thing is you can pay down thousands of people it only takes one time to miss something that could end your life. Lucky for these officers they lived through and you learn more from your mistakes than you do from finding things on people. It would be a safe bet that neither of these officers will ever make that mistake again.

I personally know a guy who was hauled into jail while still CCW after a pat down. Long story and. Lot of money was spent.

They're very lucky that this one mistake the guy was as drunk as Hilary Clinton when she fell down and bumped her noodle.

Even after years on the job, I can never be certain what goes on inside anyone's mind, impaired or sober. Because the guy had a gun, does not predestine that he would use it to shoot someone. He probably was considering his options. Most cops can tell you stories about what they find in the back of the cage car after they drop off at the cell block. One of the interesting questions I can recall being asked on the stand was; "How can you be certain that the XYZ was on my client when you placed him in the car? Couldn't that have been left behind during the transport of another individual?" For this reason, we searched the car prior to and after any transport.

Street searches are never as good as the search done on intake at the cell block. One of the things most Americans have to learn to override when going into LE is the dislike of close intimate contact with less than desirable people. Performing a good field search on an individual who has not been within ten feet of soap and water for weeks, and/or covered with various bodily fluids is not easy, but can save lives.

    Be safe.

Yeah, the cops should've patted him down a little more closely. But human beings make mistakes. This guy's a stupid fuck... here the cops are being WAY cooler than Chicago cops have a reputation for being, and he decides to be brilliant and turn a chargeless ride home into a potential attempted murder of a police officer.

Reminds me of that video of the guy that had been arrested for assaulting a police officer (I think), and he was at the police station in some room. Officer left the room for a minute, camera was running, and the guy pulled a 1911 (!) out of his waistband and shot himself in the head. Unreal.
