Good choice on that as a first bike. You can not go wrong with an SV650. Experts love them and they are very tameable for a new rider. Its a bike you can ride when new and grow with.

If you have not heard about it already, I recommend getting a series of books called "A Twist of the Wrist". There is part 1 and part 2. http://www.amazon.com/Twist-Wrist-Mo.../dp/0965045013 The books goes into how to ride smooth and practicing good habits.
