Mugshots from the 20s
I'm surprised the "Refused to open his eyes" guy didn't instead have a "refused to open his eyes until his ribs refused to stay unbroken from a billy-club" written on his photo.
Most of those gents were just in their ordinary "work" clothes. I guess their "work" consisted mostly of busting heads and doing the collecting of the protection money for da bosses.
Guess we now know where Kramer, Conan O'Brien and Lyle Lovett get their hairstyles from.

Those photos are far more interesting than the mugshots now...and the near/far depicted in each set probably allow for easier identification for the next time they are on the post office wall.
Sepia silver halide trumps digital rather easily as well...
