Agreed, but we need to consider that the other side may be wanting us to think they're playing checkers while they're actually playing chess. We can't allow ourselves to be misled into complacency - while we don't have to make any moves yet, we need to be planning our next several moves (2014 & 2016 elections) as this is exactly what the other side has been doing for the last 20 years.
Keep in mind that a good strategy in chess is to intentionally sacrifice a pawn in order to get the other side to expose themselves to you so they can use a stronger piece to win the game. If we watch for it & plan accordingly we can defeat them. But, we need to stop with our political infighting and get the best players in the game.
The days of mediocre candidates like McCain & Romney as well as our legislative choices need to end or we have no chance at all.
We need to develop short lists of exactly what we want and what we don't want in our candidate choices. If we choose a pro-2A candidate that also supports "immigration reform" (aka amnesty), in the long game we still lose.
