One of the pioneers in this field was Harold Edgerton of MIT. MIT has a laser pulse with a 1.7 picosecond pulse to take pictures of light waves.

This guy has a YouTube channel with assloads of interesting high-speed videos and oddball experiments, many are gun related. A lot of things seem kind of mundane, but become fascination at ultra low or high speeds.
