Survivor Man definitely grew on me. I like to hear all the info either way. Also, I get whiny after only like an hour without food.

He's a big fat phony! That show it totally staged.

Phony or not, it beats the hell out of some of the other crap on TV.
You want phony? SURVIVOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do admire Survivorman, but he cracks me up. I saw him break the glass off his flashlight bulb and use the filament to start a fire, then try to boil water in plastic container and rupture it. In his defense, though, he does actually go hungry and I have seen him be rescued in one episode. That really was realistic!!
I'm thinking I would not be ruining a perfectly good flashlight in a survival situation, would be great to signal with or see what is around if you hear something.. Amusingly, people come up with prehistoric ways to start a fire. Why not just throw a Bic lighter in your pack and another in your pocket. They last forever if you aren't wasteful and always work..
As for boiling water, makes a great case for getting the old aluminum G.I. canteens and a mess kit. Would be worth it's weight in gold if you were in the wilderness without them.
After carefully considering the opinions expressed in this thread I have stopped watching man vs wild and I am now watching "The Jersey Shore" exclusively. "Snookie!" has replaced bear grylls as my hero.
Survival is a mindset, Bear grylls is trying to show that mindset in an entertaining way. If you approach the situation saying to yourself that you can climb anything, eat anything, and do anything to survive, you will be 10x better off, than the liberal mindset of I am cold and hungry, come save me.
So, this co-worker of mine tells me this morning about Les "Survivorman" Stroud and how he had a show called "Off The Grid" where he had purchased land in the moddle of nowhere in Canada. In fact, the property had an access easement 7 miles in off of the nearest road with a few turn-of-the-20th century buildings.
I guess it's supposed to be a pretty interesting show.
Here is supposedly the entire episode on Google video:

Man vs Wild = staged. Bear spends more time in a Holiday Inn Express.
There was a Bear Grylls knife that was about $700.Google failed me on the details.
