I suspect we'll be seeing a SCOTUS justice retiring soon (Ginsburg maybe?) and Holder will be Obozo's choice for their replacement.

I'll bet the timing has a lot to do with this, a District Court has ordered the Justice Dept. to produce the Fast and Furious documents by October 22:

I think he just wants out while Senator Reid can still control the confirmation process for his successor. If the democrats lose the Senate, it's entirely possible that there won't be a successor confirmed until 2017. Unlikely, but possible.

ETA: I think the FnF ruling is also a big part of the timing. Like maybe half and half. But Holder has been whining about wanting to quit for a while.
