We just did a tour of CA. Kept Long guns in storage safe locked. Mags for long guns were in an ammo can. The handguns were in a separate ammo can whick was kept under the seat. With the hand gun mags in center console. NOW heres the thing with hand guns. The CADOJ says must be in Locked Box , container , etc. What we did was use on of the plastic ones (pictured & linked) enlarged the hole where a lock goes through, to accept a combo lock. The lock was kept at the last digit of the combo, SO... For all purposes (Visible) it was secure. BUT allowed with a quick snap of the lock to be accessible. We kept a copy of CADOJ Firearm transportation with us. This way IF an issue arose we could show the law was being adhered to.
Not once were we hassled or felt like having CO plates was an issue. Did we follow suggested speed limits BUT Guns were kept secure, according to CA laws. The one time i got stopped was let off with a warning and told to enjoy our stay.
