    Uber bans drivers and passengers
    from carrying firearms

Uber will no longer help armed people get around. New rules quietly published on the ride-hailing app's website this month now prohibit passengers and drivers from carrying guns while using the service.

"Uber and its affiliates ... prohibit possessing firearms of any kind in a vehicle," read the new rules. Those found to violate the rule "may" lose access to Uber's services. The company explains its rational behind the move thusly: "We seek to ensure that everyone using the Uber digital platform ... feels safe and comfortable using the service."

Ride unarmed, or don't ride at all

The new rules come just as gun control is returning to the forefront of Americans' minds. On Wednesday, a 21-year-old white man entered a black church in Charleston, South Carolina and opened fire. It was just the latest in a spat of mass shootings across America over the years — this one took nine lives.

But Uber says that the rule is not a direct response to the shooting. A spokesperson tellsThe Wall Street Journal that the new policy came into effect on June 10th, a week before the shooting.

The new policy also raises the question of what Uber can and can't tell its drivers to do. Uber's business relies on legally treating its drivers as independent contractors, not employees. A commission in California recently ruled that an Uber driver there was legally an employee, potentially undermining the company's business model. For what it's worth, Lyft, an Uber competitor, similarly bans all weapons from its vehicles.
I guess Uber decided to roll-out the red carpet for the bad guys.

C'mon, guys. It's not about logic or reason. Sheesh. Turn off your brains, they're just getting in the way. There is no 'truth', it's only your feelings that are important.

I was recently considering driving for Uber just because but now that I see this stance I doubt it'll happen. Some cell phone app company that doesn't employ anyone other than marketing & coders thinks they can tell people what to do as it pertains to their constitutional rights? Idiots.

What do you guys think about what is happening in California right now, if you really care so much about what Uber is doing?

Jer, how is this policy any different than the policies employed by 99% of every other national company?

You're talking about employee/employer agreements. This is an entirely different set of ideas at play here. Would you want Facebook telling you that there's the possibility of additional charges if you arrange a meeting with Facebook or mention it & then have a firearm on you when something goes down? You can't simply say 'I don't use Facebook' because that's side stepping the issue and any app could be interchangeable for purpose of this discussion.

The Uber drives are just contractors, expect in California now, so I would liken it to like telling IT contractors not to carry guns.

At what point in the transaction will either the driver or the passenger be at an Suber facility?
