What everyone else said. Currently using the Ace Hardware knock offs with psuedo impact protection. I like to install a grommet in the wrists so I can run a carabiner through them and wear them on my belt so they are ready, but not taking up space in a pocket.

I wear the Mechanix originals for both wood working and shooting. As everyone has mentioned, they offer the most dexterity for the protection. However, I find they wear out very quickly. Usually, it's the thumb and forefinger of the dominant hand that develop holes first. I've recently switched over to the leather-tipped gloves. Like condoms, I suppose, you lose a little on the sensitivity, but gain in longevity.

I wear Mechanix gloves all day. Only get about a week out of them. I'll let everybody in on a little secret. Buy them at Lowe's they will take them back no questions asked. I haven't paid for gloves in 5 yrs.

When I worked at Discount, they gave me as many pairs as I could ruin. The manager had a couple choices. I would suggest Nitrile gloves. Standard exam gloves or heavy duty textured type. A pair will last a few hours, and a case is cheap. I still use them at home.

I worked for both Discount and Big O when I was younger. DO NOT waste your money on Mechanix gloves. They'll fall apart in a month or less. Especially once the snow hits. When those things get wet, they are like toilet paper when battling snow studs and wheels.

Some nice thick cowhide or similar gloves are what he needs. Something with a decent lining and thick hide shell.
