I liked it, despite the shortcomings- like killing off my favorite character from the OT, wooden acting from the main villain (much akin to Hayden Christiansen), and rehashing of plot points from Ep IV. For everyone hoping that we'll see some of the great points from the expanded universe, they came out several months ago and said this is a new timeline separate from the EU. So you know what that means, no Admiral Thrawn (perhaps the coolest SW villain ever), probably no Mara Jade (who has one of the cooler story arcs for a character- goes from being "The Emperor's Hand" to becoming Luke's bride), only one kid born from Han and Leia (which sucks, because their kids turn into badasses), and doubtful to see a return of Boba Fett as he was brought back in the EU.

I, too, believe that Rey is Luke's daughter, which made for a pretty epic cousin fight at the end of VII, and opens up some interesting conflict in the future trilogy films. I didn't like how they beat the fact that Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son... They mentioned it 4 or 5 times, as if we didn't get it the first time they said it. I really wish they had kept it a secret until Han confronted him on the bridge, that would have been an interesting twist ala the ESB "I am your father" moment. Nicely done JJ, you missed a great "Ah ha!" you could have tossed in there.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Rogue One, which comes out in 12 months- from what I've read so far it's the story of how the plans for the original Death Star were stolen and smuggled into the hands of the rebels; so it takes place just prior to Ep IV. And early rumors (I know, how well can we trust them), are that the film coming out in 2018 after Ep VIII will be a Boba Fett origin story that shows the dichotomy between Fett and Solo- I'm not holding my breath, but should be interesting to see where Disney takes the franchise.

Yeah, it felt like the true title was "Star Wars - How Many References To The Originals Can We Stick In."

I also was laughing at the fact when people use the standard "SPOILER: Snape kills Dumbledore" line, in this case it actually sort of applies. I mean, that kid looked very much like Snape, and his dad was as old as Dumbledore, so...

oh man no way... please don't be joking about a Boba Fett film. Hollywood never does what the fans dizzily crave. Re: EU versus new universe, Boba Fett would be older than Leia at this point, it's just as well he wasn't included in EP VII (I could have done with a cameo, however).

The fact she didn't kill him in that weakened state goes pretty far to his abilities especially since she definitely knew how to fight. Combine that with the fact he was trying not to kill her as he had it in his mind he could turn her etc.
I didn't get that impression. There is a sense of morality to Rey's choices.

I'm also of the opinion that Rey is Luke's kid. The lightsaber of Vader...then Luke...is calling to her.

I thought Finn was a coward whiner. The budding relationship between him and Rey was lame. A tough orphan chick like her wouldn't hang with a douche like him.

Ren seemed about right. A silver spoon kid grows up to be insane...

Carrie Fisher sucks at acting and is nuts.

Nerds in the theater that cheered everytime an old character appeared need to get a life. They even cheered for R2. But crickets when Leia appeared. Ha.

The rest I liked. Yes it was the same plot, so what. It was obvious to me that was the entire point after I heard the first one liner from the originals. There were plenty of intentional jokes in the dialog poking fun at this new movie being a replay on the originals.

Of course they built a new bigger death star! Rebels blow your shit up? You build a bigger more badass planet destroying planet.

Rey is Lukes kid. Finn is Lando's kid and snoke is Boba Fett. My predictions.

Kylo Ren I'm mixed about. With the mask on he was a badass. When he took it off, he was a pansy. Totally thought they casted him wrong.

I think JJ Abrams took the old movies into one with lots of throwbacks for the new younger fans. Summarizing everything from past to lead to new ones in future.

Don't forget Finn went down on that planet specifically just for her, and picked up a lightsaber against a Dark Lord (or whatever Ren is) to try and protect her. A sanitation dude with no obligations tells the resistance that he can disable the shield, just so he can get down there and try to rescue the girl... doesn't sound that cowardly to me (reckless and stupid though, yes). He had stability and a steady job as a stormtrooper in lopsided (towards the first order) battles, but he didn't like the political scene so he deserted. That's kinda like a wehrmacht soldier deserting in '43 after they start shooting Ukrainian villagers for nothing. Besides not wanting to up & join the resistance to fight against the first order because he was tired of it (stormtrooper'ing was all he had ever known, is it not fair that he can now choose to go do whatever else he wants?), I don't recall him doing anything that was cowardly or whining.
