    Default Tumbling vs sonic cleaning

What are your thoughts I live in an apartment and the tumbler is kinda loud I have been thinking about going to a sonic cleaner but not sure how effective the sonic cleaning is

I'm not that impressed with a sonic cleaner for cleaning brass. I purchased a really nice (Crest) sonic cleaner last year--mostly to do a thorough job of cleaning my handguns. I had always heard of folks using them on cases, so I gave it a try. Don't get me wrong, it worked, and the brass was clean, but it wasn't fantastic and I'm not sure it was as clean as when I use my normal stainless tumbler setup.

For my money, I'm still using the stainless wet tumbling as my first choice. I wouldn't think the tumbler would transmit much sound through apartment walls as most of the noise is a higher frequency. In my times of shared-wall living, I remember hearing the low frequency stuff from neighboring activities... Cabinet doors thumping closed, bass from stereos or TV, etc.

    Just another data point.

Tumbling is way better than sonic. Wet is better than tumbling. It depends on what price range you want to stay in. AND how much work you want to do for super clean brass.

Some HDPE standoffs for your stainless steel tumbler sitting on some fatmat or similar will really quiet down the noise. You beef up the deadening by putting some acoustic foam/rouxal around the tumbler as well.

Big thing is sound transference via the base into the surrounding structure (e.g. floor/workbench). Minimize that and you could be good to go.

Wet tumblers with a rubber lining are pretty quiet and they do the best job at cleaning brass IMO.

Just put it out on the porch. That's what I did when in an apartment. No need to spend hundreds of dollars on wet cleaners and SS pins and ultrasonic cleaners. Wow.
Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Sounds like he already has a wet tumbler, but if not, better cover the tumbler on the porch. I had the exact same question years ago, put my tumbler on the porch, and squirrels chewed through the top to get to the walnut shells.

What's the issue with you and squirrels, eating your nuts?

Rat traps filled with peanut butter. End of problem.
