In that area where I lived there were "snow belts" where it wasn't uncommon to get completely snowed in. As in, open your front door and there's snow up to the eaves.
The snow in NY is usually much more dense than out here. There were years (1992-1993ish) where we got FEET of snow dumped and plows simply couldn't move it. They dug out the last couple of V-plows they had and used backhoes/frontend loaders to remove snow. This was in Ulster County. There were years where my house got dug out with a backhoe, and others where I had to plow using a bulldozer.

One thing people might not realize about NYC is that there is nowhere for the snow to go. It basically needs to be scooped up, loaded in trucks, and dumped somewhere (or the ocean if they let them) to melt.

More "interesting" are the people down south, where they have no means of moving the snow. A college buddy of mine living in Virginia has over 18" to deal with.

Anyway, this sort of "news" is why I don't bother watching any of it.

Why can't they just pack it down with the Trash Trucks?

I have no doubt it's difficult to deal with. It's difficult anywhere. But 24 hour news coverage like it was the end of the world? I was under the impression that snow in NY was a pretty common occurrence in the winter months.
