If you manually download and install each major release into it's own directory, you can manage many versions of java installed side by side. I have to do this on my work laptop for the myriad of manufacturer's appliances I setup/manage.
There are some that use downloadable java applets that refuse to work with any current browser due to security restrictions in the browser, and one in particular that requires the applet to get through the initial setup via ethernet (if serial console isn't available) - (P.S. FU very much Brocade), but there are ways to launch the applets without a browser.

Not as much internally for our java issues, most any current version seems to be ok. It's all the outside vendors/agencies we deal with. I was just told that we need to use a .66 version of java to access a service? WTH. We're behind the times and using .91 version. I can't go back to .66 version.
ugh.
Sometimes people trip and fall down stairs.
Sometimes assholes push people down stairs.
That doesn't mean "stairs are bad" nor does it make someone who pushes someone down the stairs any less of an asshole.
Of course you can.

Download the x86 offline version (you are using x86 java and not x64 right?) and install it into a different directory.
Using java control panel, you can select which versions are active, default.

Java's 'write once run everywhere' promise only seems to work with malware. So many vendors want their own version and often break as even '.' releases change the architecture of the major release that did work.
Having multiple versions of Java installed usually leads to all kinds of compatibility issues as the Class registrations step all over each other. Often, the last version installed wins. The older exploitable versions can also be called and those exploits still exist on the system.
...at least this mess is job security.
...to those that think Macs are perfect...put down the Kool-Aid and slowly back away. As long as humans are involved, nothing is perfect. Not even a Glock.
As for whatever Linux distro is the favorite this month, the other 99% of computer users just want their software to work. They don't want to have to figure it out. They want to be able to go to Best Buy and buy a printer, connect it and go.

Liberals never met a slippery slope they didn't grease.

I wish technology solved people issues. It seems to just reveal them.

Discussion is an exchange of intelligence. Argument is an exchange of
ignorance. Ever found a liberal that you can have a discussion with?
Not sure what type of Java software you're talking about here. I write Java for a living, enterprise level not consumer stuff. We develop/run on Mac and Windows and always run in production on Linux. What we do at work runs the same on all three platforms. There are lots of consumer products written in java that do just fine too. Chrome for instance is Java based, for me it runs the same on Mac/Windows/linux/Ipad/Android.
No one said Macs are perfect but my 2.5 year old MacBook Pro with OS/X is far superior to my brand new HP Envy with Windows 10 for processing my photos, running spreadsheets, and doing general computing. The only things the Envy is better at are playing games (which is why I bought it) and linking to my new Smart TV wirelessly. Windows 10 seems to be more stable than NT or Vista, definitely more enjoyable than Vista, but still has very annoying behavior now and then. For my money, the last Windows release I really liked was Windows XP. I stopped building my own PCs and transitioned over to Macs when I realized what a POS Vista was. I could load Linux or FreeBSD on my PCs but I like the tight hardware engineering on the Macs and don't really feel like playing around with the OS internals anymore.
