When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away!
I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
Leaving guns in my vehicles is something I just can't bring myself to do. I don't even like to do it when I'm entering a restricted area (post office, etc.). I've never had a breakin, but still.... I'm very careful about having them visible, like putting them in the truck for range trips, and I live in a very good neighborhood.
Ah, This Cowboy's Hat! I was thinking about the long haired hippy song by Charlie Daniels...about the hippy walking into the bar and asking for help or something like that.
Chris LeDoux, great old country artist...still hear him every now and again on the radio![]()

#1 Job in the world, being a Dad!
I was always told yes it can be loaded in the car.
Yes, in Colorado, you can have your hand gun loaded, chambered, and ANYWHERE in your vehicle, including on your person, without a permit. I was once wearing my gun fully loaded with one in the pipe (no other way to carry) in an IWB holster, with no permit. I drove through a DUI check point and the officer wanted me to pull over and get out of the car. I did, but told him I had a gun. He said that was fine and told me to get out and just put my hands on the roof when I did and they'd take care of the gun for me. I got out, hands on roof, someone took the gun (I told them to be careful since there was no external safety). Someone took it back to a cruiser while the other officer took me to the side to do a road side. I got about 20 seconds into the road side before he abruptly stopped and shook his head at his partner. Apparently I had been telling him the truth when I told him I had had only one beer at dinner three hours ago.
They put the gun on the passenger side floor with the action open, mag out, and tossed the now unchambered round on the floor and told me to have a good night. This was in Federal Heights by the way.
"There are no finger prints under water."
Yep, that's what I've heard too. Now long guns like rifles and shotguns can have loaded magazines, but the chambers must be empty. I think I've heard that's a DOW law or requirement. Probably a good idea. There's been too many accidents with people getting shot while dragging a rifle or shotgun out of a vehicle and the trigger getting snagged on something. My wife used to work with a lady that lost her oldest son that way.
yes a HANDGUN can be loaded and one in the chamber.
RIFLES can only have them in the mag, nothing in the chamber. if you are hunting with an OHV, the entire thing must be unloaded and in a fully sealed hardcase...no scabbards.
for some reason i thought they changed the law and it says long guns must be fully unloaded, but i can't find anything on it on CDOW or a .gov so maybe I am mistaken. the CDOW says you can have them loaded, just not in the chamber while transporting in a vehicle so I don't think it changed.
here is the rules on that (page 7):
